Pokemon Black and White spotlight: the monkey trio and their evolutions

We're blazing on through the Isshu Pokedex, and this week we're covering the elemental monkey trio, Yanappu (Grass), Baoppu (Fire), and Hiyappu (Water), and their evolutions, Yanakkii, Baokkii and Hiyakkii. These goofy bastards are somewhat similiar to the Eeveelutions of Red/Blue, except that they don't have a Normal-type base form and there are only three types, with one evolution each.

It might be easier to think of them as counterparts to the starters, since depending on the starter you picked, an NPC east of Sanyou City (in the area where you first encounter Munna) will give you the monkey that's weak to your starter. Let's take a closer look at these delightful simians - first off, three things to note about all three monkeys:

1) They all have the same base stats.
2) None of their evolutions learn any moves through level up, so evolve wisely.
3) They can all learn the new Flying-type move Acrobat at level 31 (first stage only), which does light damage but can hit any of the three opponents in a triple battle no matter where the user is positioned, and does double damage if the user isn't holding an item.
4) The trio's design is partially based on the three wise monkeys: see no evil (Hiyappu), hear no evil (Baoppu) and speak no evil (Yanappu).

Dream World ability: Overgrow – increases power of Grass-type moves by 1.5 if Pokemon has less than 1/3 HP remaining

Evolution family: From Yanappu via Leaf Stone

The first of the monkey trio to be revealed pre-release, broccoli-esque Yanappu's final form, Yanakkii, is probably the most appealing of the trio looks-wise. If you've got all your TMs in order, you shouldn't have to worry too much about evolving too early. Leech Seed is always a good option for Grass-types, which Yanappu learns at level 16. Like all the monkeys, Yanakki's Attack and Special Attack base stats are even at 98 each, so teaching physical vs special attacks isn't really an issue, although it also depends on what nature you pick.

You know what? The more I learn about Black and White, the less I care. I really wanted something much more but they just gave me the same game and called it a revolution. Then, there's things like this. The exact same Pokemon, just palette swapped. Not even anything interesting like the Eeveelutions where you had to pick and choose, since you can apparently catch them, too.

all of the monkey evolutions look stupid

That's interesting; I thought Hiyakkii was the best looking final form. In fact, the knowledge that I would get that monkey cemented my decision to start with Smugleaf.

Hiakki's design would be better if I got a girl... I smell repeated-reset if I get this game. And I'm getting the Grass starter mainly to beat the hell out of the sellout fire/fighting pig. (A good name for which would be applesauce, porkchop, or smokey.)

whoa whoa whoa back up. Triple Battles? whats to stop people from choosing the 3 main types and never losing? also thats using half your team. you know how fast those battles would go?

i'm super psyched for this game, but i think that the evolutions look like queers.

Fuck monkeys. The only good primates are human beings, seeing cartoony anthropomorphizations of lower apes and monkeys just pisses me off.

Dont know about you guys but I like Hitakki's design better! Im choosing the grass snake so YAY i get it :3 I find it odd that it has more chances of being a Boy then a girl, u mean, LOOK AT IT! XD

@Glides: They'll be changed. Every Pokemon has a different name in each territory.
  • Glides - October 16, 2010 11:08 p.m.

Are these going to be the final names of all the Pokemon or are they going to American-ize them for us? Just wondering, because I'm pretty damn sure that Bulbasaur doesn't sound Japanese.
  • nomnom52 - October 16, 2010 10:48 p.m.

I actually think that Baoikki is the best monkey. and Daienki (Final water evo) can learn Boiling Water via TM, so I'm not too worried about missing out on that move. Super psyched for BW, can't wait!
  • wharcraff - October 16, 2010 10:28 p.m.

Great post. In a semi-related issue, since two of the Isshu starters have a nickname(Smugleaf,Wotter) I think the fire-pig should be hereby known as Emboar. If that's not already being used.
  • GameManiac - October 16, 2010 9:21 p.m.

I intend to get the grass starter, so I suppose Hiyappu is for me. Boiling Water...neat!
  • Pocotron - October 16, 2010 9:08 p.m.

    Here I come fire-monkey! again...
  • MrSuitMan - October 16, 2010 9:05 p.m.

  • shmoopy97 - October 16, 2010 8:31 p.m.

Im going to end up with the fire one wich does not seem to bad i always start with water starter so i gusse ill be useing him. can you catch them in the wild though?
  • FrozenImplosion - October 16, 2010 8:28 p.m.

It's unusual that the grass type looks better than the rest to me, but this time definitely. I was anticipating the water one to be awesome, but it looks like it has creepy blue hair... wth.
