Mario describes the 3DS for five minutes in surreal video

Mostly silent for the first 15 years of his career, when Mario and his voice actor Charles Martinet hit the big time in Super Mario 64, the former plumber hasn’t stopped talking since. In the years since Mario 64, the mustachioed one has limited himself to small sentences like, “It’s-a me, Mario!,” and, “Woo Hoo! Just what I needed.” While he was certainly talkative, Mario rarely said more than five words at a time, and then this video changed all that. Watch as Mario thoroughly describes the 3DS in great detail to new consumers.

We suppose it works as a way of introducing the 3D handheld to unfamiliar consumers, but after all those years of barely saying anything, we were slightly disturbed by this official Nintendo production. It’s cloyingly cute to hear Mario’s clichéd accent pronounce games as “games-es-is,” but once we got past that, we mostly just sat in disbelief that the thing even existed. Do you think hearing Mario describe the system will sell people on the 3DS? And could this be the start of a more verbose Mario? Personally, we hope Mario takes a vow of silence for at least a year after that.

It just... hasn't hit me yet. I mean, wow. Technically, isn't this historically significant?

The beginning is like one of those scary popup vids on youtube--"Take-a closer look..... A-closer......now-a looka little bit closer... Giant Mario face appears instead of scary face"

This is going to provide TONS of TalkRadar sound effects.

    That was downright strange.

I thought it was okay, a little overdone maybe, but it definately makes listening about the 3DS much more interesting.

    So it's come to this...

At times he sounds like an Italian Mickey Mouse going through puberty.

It was cute until the 2min mark. Then I cringed through it.

This is good promotion in my view. A new Mario Games is coming out next week, "Super Mario Land 3D". It is a make or break title for the 3DS, what better way of getting the younger generation to and even us (those young at heart) to go out and get a 3DS

I was alright with it. At least he's been gradually stepping up the talking over the course of his life instead of suddenly having speaking parts thrust upon him in one giant barrage (*coughSoniccough*).

Does this remind anybody else of that Crash 2 promo video way back?

Kill it with fire... It's no wonder the Princess doesn't put up a fight while she's getting captured. INT. BOWSER THRONE ROOM MARIO bursts in through BOWSER'S heavy metal door and stares determinedly at the evil dinosaur. PRINCESS PEACH sits in a cage behind BOWSER looking bored. MARIO: WOOOOO HOOOOOOO!!!! ITSA ME, MARIO!!! BOWSER: Rawr PRINCESS PEACH: (to herself) Oh for f*ck's sake...

...its-a supa-dupa easy for any kind of player...surreal...signed - also listen close to the weird bass-play in the background
  • samgardner94 - November 7, 2011 2:45 p.m.

How has the princess put up with that for so long, sounds like Jar Jar Binks

Honestly, it wasn't that bad in my opinion. Wrong focus? Oh yeah. Way too long? Definitely. But had they made this short, sweet, and to the point (the point being games) this could have been a neat little commercial.

Silly 3D glasses?! Ouch. Take THAT Sony.
  • GameManiac - November 7, 2011 2:06 p.m.

I found it bearable. Enjoyable? Almost... Surreal? Indubitably. Makes me wonder if Link did this.

He hasn't even said anything at all. He's just grunted and yelled HIYA!
