i dunno. convincing anyone without a boner/nostalgia for 16 bit games that old rpgs are the place to start seems like a stretch to me, regardless of their perceived quality. i imagine you'd have to have some hook, like awesome graphics or persona's maturity and cheekiness, to get them invested. then, before they know it, they're grinding for that skill, or piece of equipment or story (or persona fusion!), and loving every minute of it. i would also echo those that have suggested star ocean, or any others with a nice real(ish)time combat system. would help smooth the transition.
  • The_Tingler - May 9, 2013 12:14 a.m.

Don't really think so, it comes down to the games themselves. I couldn't care less about SNES games and despite everyone saying how great it is Final Fantasy VI left me cold - but I played both Earthbound and Chrono Trigger recently and loved them all the way to the end.
  • avantguardian - May 9, 2013 1:51 a.m.

i like all those games, but you and i don't seem like people 'who think they hate jrpgs'...
  • Guardian88 - May 8, 2013 7:39 p.m.

Great list. But Star Ocean, Kingdom Hearts, and Golden Sun should be on the list.
  • Cyberninja - May 8, 2013 6:11 p.m.

Great List through if we are going between the easier to access Persona games(I like 1 & 2 more but they are old school and may be off putting to new fans) I would with Persona 3 in some form first because it has a more touching ending and I like Emo Jesus as a protag more then Yu
  • avantguardian - May 8, 2013 11 p.m.

lol at emo jesus. but it seems pretty hard to discern between them, as i think they were just created as a vessel for myself. i DO like blue better than grey, though, so there's that:)
  • DarthPunk - May 9, 2013 2:38 a.m.

I'd only recommend playing 3 first if it was the PSP because I'd imagine quite a lot of people be put off by not having full control of all of your party
  • Cyberninja - May 9, 2013 7:57 p.m.

Well I actually see the whole less control of the party thing as a benefit because then they don't have to worry about their learning how to use anyone of then the protag at first.
  • Sarah LeBoeuf - May 9, 2013 3:10 p.m.

It was hard choosing between Persona 3 and 4. They're both so good!
  • SanAndreas - May 8, 2013 5:45 p.m.

I love JRPGs, and I'd recommend any of those games. FFIX was one of my favorites on the PS1, while Valkyria Chronicles is my favorite game of the generation. I'd also recommend Ni no Kuni.
  • Sarah LeBoeuf - May 9, 2013 3:11 p.m.

I loved Ni no Kuni, but I thought it had way too much grinding and too many JRPG cliches for a non-fan to get into. Plus Oliver is a bit derpy. But Mr. Drippy rules!
  • ThatGamerDude - May 8, 2013 4:13 p.m.

Even though this is a list for people who think they hate JRPGs, I do love JRPGs especially Chrono Trigger and Kingdom Hearts (Which is on this list) as well as Star Ocean and the Tales series.
  • taokaka - May 8, 2013 4:05 p.m.

LOL! JRPGs are dead, didn't you get the memo? It doesn't matter how many good ones come out, the genre is still dead and you shouldn't be trying to shove the corpse that once was the JRPG down anyone's throat. If you were to suggest a JRPG to JRPG haters then at least suggest one that is a fusion with another genre they may like, for example porn. That is why record of agarest war is the best JRPG for JRPG haters because it revolves around a dude that needs to shove his cock up several women to make babies that will battle for him. That's the type of trash that will teach people the wise lesson to stay away from JRPGs. #weekofhate
  • Guardian88 - May 8, 2013 7:41 p.m.

No one likes a hater dude. If you don't like JRPGs, then shut the f*** up.
  • taokaka - May 9, 2013 3:50 a.m.

I used to be a naive fool like you but then I grew up and removed that cancerous growth from up my ass called Terrance. Without the constant anal penetration I could appreciate the smaller things in life for what they really are, painfully dull. Playing games should give me the same sensation as hooking a car battery up to my nipples but most games feel like flat batteries and JRPGs feel like my nipples are charging the battery. Only an impish buffoon such as yourself would defend charging car batteries with your nipples as a legitimate way to waste what little time we have until the joyful event known as death. #weekofhate

You obviously missed the point of the comment, so I'll say it again: No one likes a hater. Oh, and your username is quite appropriate. Tao is quite dim-witted as you are. JRPGs are quite unique and being unique is a good thing. That means that it stands out from the rest of the crowd. It doesn't blend in like these piece of s*** generic FPSs (all the f***ing same). One more thing, why the hell would your nipples charge a car battery? Why the hell you make that metaphor? When the hell would that metaphor ever make sense?
  • taokaka - June 25, 2013 7:10 p.m.

Did it take you two months to come up with this painfully mediocre response? Defending JRPGs from their critics is just as likely to succeed as getting into the pants of a ten year old when one of their parents are around. That's why there's so many sites dedicated to JRPGs for JRPG fans because normal people are like the parents in that situation, JRPGs the ten year old and JRPG fans the creepy pedophile. JRPGs unique? LOL!!!! JRPGs aren't unique in the slightest they're all about saving the world as a semi-silent protagonist and feeling up as many flat chested girls along the way, true story. FPS's are all shit as well, but I'm confused as to why a JRPG fan isn't a fan of a Fucking Pedophile Simulator, it's nearly identical to a JRPG. They work the same way, in a JRPG you get a bunch of children on your team to fight monsters while in an FPS you get a bunch of children to fight other children with you and if you're lucky a child will come and teabag you. See FPS's are just like JRPGs but with the pedophilia dialed up to 11. #weekofhate Oh wait it's no longer the week of hate, I suppose I can actually give you a proper response now. You see at the start of the week of hate I said I'd win it by posting comments full of hate, in fact I actually like JRPGs.

You have shown me the error of my ways. Thanks!

Vagrant Story was a great JRPG that had a more Western feel to it. A bit heavy on menus though so might not be ideal for newcomers, but the story was fantastic and a brilliant battle system. I'm glad FFIX got mentioned though. That's my favourite FF due to the setting, battle system, story, lack of whiny emo teenagers in FFVIII. I can enjoy FFVIII but really Edea would've made a much better villain for the whole game. Like many others though, FFVII was what got me into RPGs as a whole, although now, FFIX is probably the most accessible of the series (in no way does accessible mean it's not a fantastic game)
  • wishingW3L - May 8, 2013 3:08 p.m.

Never understood the hype for those mediocre Earthbound games. Played one for a few hours and never touched it again and JRPG's have always been one of my fav genres because I like anime too but Earthbound? Get that overrated crap out of my sight!
  • The_Tingler - May 9, 2013 12:16 a.m.

Seriously, you're like the only person in the entire world.
  • JMarsella09 - May 8, 2013 2:01 p.m.

    I adore all of these.
