I love JRPGs, and I'd recommend any of those games. FFIX was one of my favorites on the PS1, while Valkyria Chronicles is my favorite game of the generation. I'd also recommend Ni no Kuni.

I loved Ni no Kuni, but I thought it had way too much grinding and too many JRPG cliches for a non-fan to get into. Plus Oliver is a bit derpy. But Mr. Drippy rules!

Even though this is a list for people who think they hate JRPGs, I do love JRPGs especially Chrono Trigger and Kingdom Hearts (Which is on this list) as well as Star Ocean and the Tales series.

LOL! JRPGs are dead, didn't you get the memo? It doesn't matter how many good ones come out, the genre is still dead and you shouldn't be trying to shove the corpse that once was the JRPG down anyone's throat. If you were to suggest a JRPG to JRPG haters then at least suggest one that is a fusion with another genre they may like, for example porn. That is why record of agarest war is the best JRPG for JRPG haters because it revolves around a dude that needs to shove his cock up several women to make babies that will battle for him. That's the type of trash that will teach people the wise lesson to stay away from JRPGs. #weekofhate

No one likes a hater dude. If you don't like JRPGs, then shut the f*** up.

I used to be a naive fool like you but then I grew up and removed that cancerous growth from up my ass called Terrance. Without the constant anal penetration I could appreciate the smaller things in life for what they really are, painfully dull. Playing games should give me the same sensation as hooking a car battery up to my nipples but most games feel like flat batteries and JRPGs feel like my nipples are charging the battery. Only an impish buffoon such as yourself would defend charging car batteries with your nipples as a legitimate way to waste what little time we have until the joyful event known as death. #weekofhate

You obviously missed the point of the comment, so I'll say it again: No one likes a hater. Oh, and your username is quite appropriate. Tao is quite dim-witted as you are. JRPGs are quite unique and being unique is a good thing. That means that it stands out from the rest of the crowd. It doesn't blend in like these piece of s*** generic FPSs (all the f***ing same). One more thing, why the hell would your nipples charge a car battery? Why the hell you make that metaphor? When the hell would that metaphor ever make sense?

Did it take you two months to come up with this painfully mediocre response? Defending JRPGs from their critics is just as likely to succeed as getting into the pants of a ten year old when one of their parents are around. That's why there's so many sites dedicated to JRPGs for JRPG fans because normal people are like the parents in that situation, JRPGs the ten year old and JRPG fans the creepy pedophile. JRPGs unique? LOL!!!! JRPGs aren't unique in the slightest they're all about saving the world as a semi-silent protagonist and feeling up as many flat chested girls along the way, true story. FPS's are all shit as well, but I'm confused as to why a JRPG fan isn't a fan of a Fucking Pedophile Simulator, it's nearly identical to a JRPG. They work the same way, in a JRPG you get a bunch of children on your team to fight monsters while in an FPS you get a bunch of children to fight other children with you and if you're lucky a child will come and teabag you. See FPS's are just like JRPGs but with the pedophilia dialed up to 11. http://bit.ly/14w3xXz #weekofhate Oh wait it's no longer the week of hate, I suppose I can actually give you a proper response now. You see at the start of the week of hate I said I'd win it by posting comments full of hate, in fact I actually like JRPGs.

You have shown me the error of my ways. Thanks!

Vagrant Story was a great JRPG that had a more Western feel to it. A bit heavy on menus though so might not be ideal for newcomers, but the story was fantastic and a brilliant battle system. I'm glad FFIX got mentioned though. That's my favourite FF due to the setting, battle system, story, lack of whiny emo teenagers in FFVIII. I can enjoy FFVIII but really Edea would've made a much better villain for the whole game. Like many others though, FFVII was what got me into RPGs as a whole, although now, FFIX is probably the most accessible of the series (in no way does accessible mean it's not a fantastic game)

Never understood the hype for those mediocre Earthbound games. Played one for a few hours and never touched it again and JRPG's have always been one of my fav genres because I like anime too but Earthbound? Get that overrated crap out of my sight!

Seriously, you're like the only person in the entire world.
  • JMarsella09 - May 8, 2013 2:01 p.m.

    I adore all of these.
  • obviouslyadouche - May 8, 2013 1:58 p.m.

I was enjoying P4g, until I got to a boss and realized I hadn't been grinding enough and there was no way for me to beat it, haven't gone back since.
  • Tyrande - May 8, 2013 1:54 p.m.

i'll have to include Final Fantasy VI. the characters are interesting and with plausible backgrounds, there are no emos in there (maybe a short depression somewhere), the story is great, the villain is awesome, he is just insane, he does things because he can and that's it! plus it's a steampunk theme they have there.
  • kpnut - May 8, 2013 12:40 p.m.

Only game I've played in this list is FFIX and Zidane does have an emo moment in teh game, but for a completely legitimate reason (in my opinion) because he has his soul taken.
  • kpnut - May 8, 2013 12:59 p.m.

*the hate it when I make that mistake
  • timeaisis - May 8, 2013 12:32 p.m.

FFIX, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound are the best games on that list. At some point, JRPGs got completely caught up with themselves and their importance. These games are the very antithesis of JRPG excess. Simple, but interesting stories. Enjoyable characters. Straightforward, but elegant mechanics. Oh, and might I add that when whoever wrote these games made something happen in the story, it always had a reason. The narrative structure, even though it was a video game, just works. Unlike some "into themselves" JRPGs like FFX that just through crazy twist after crazy twist for the sake of a "cool" plot. Ugh. And one last thing...none of these games take themselves too seriously and know that they are a video game. This is a factor that is severely missing in current generation video games (of all kinds) methinks.
  • agentkuo - May 8, 2013 12:14 p.m.

Earhtbound is the only one I've played on the list, and its one of the best RPG's ever made. I've played the demo for Valkyria Chronicles, and that game is an RTS with some RPG elements, so I don't think it counts. I'm not a fan of games like Final Fantasy and stuff, but Disgaea's kinda fun. Paper Mario should be on here, since its technically a JRPG.
  • Meleedragon27 - May 8, 2013 3:17 p.m.

As someone who doesn't care much for JRPGs, I wholly agree with your statement about how Paper Mario should be on here. Heck, I'd be willing to even add Super Mario RPG; they were all fun games (though I'll admit to not playing Sticker Star or Super Paper Mario... yet). As for Disgaea, as much as I enjoyed the gameplay (and I did), the grinding was terribly out-of-hand and the game became particularly difficult to enjoy because of that. I still have Disgaea 2 on my shelf, unopened because I really don't want to deal with another grindfest. Instead, I'll nominate that the JRPG haters play Final Fantasy Tactics/War of the Lions - The gameplay is very similar to Disgaea but with nowhere near as much grinding, plus I found the art direction in those games to be terrific. I'd... stay away from the Tactics Advance games, though.
