Game music of the day: ICO

GR's ongoing tribute to the beloved world of videogame music

Words: on July 30, 2010

Game: ICO

Song: You Were There

Composer: Michiru Oshima, Koicih Yamazaki, Steven Geraghty

Above: You Were There from ICO

Truly one of the PS2's most brilliant titles, ICO has gone on to become one of the most adored adventure games of all time. The heady puzzles, dreamlike visuals and tangible bond between cursed Ico and the ghostly Yorda would be standout features in any other game - to have them all in one, plus a stirring, subdued soundtrack, is a once-in-a-generation event.

The above music plays during the ending, which you can watch here. Ico, who had literally led Yorda around by the hand for most of the game, now lays battered and weakened. In a touching reversal, Yorda must now carry him out of the crumbling castle, repaying him for the constant peril he endured while protecting her from the tyrannical Queen. Already a memorable sequence, made even better by this song.

Up next is "Heal," which plays while you save your game. It's an extremely quick and almost inaudible tune, but no less emotional. Something about it cuts right through all the jaded moments of your teen or adult years and really makes you feel the connection between Ico and Yorda. I... I think I have something in all of my eyes...

And then here's a badassss remix of Heal from SuperGreenX, also found on OverClocked ReMix. I love this just as much as the original song, so enjoy it with maximum feeling.

I always found Shadow of the Collosus a better game with a better score, but Ico was more beutifal by far.

Fun bit of trivia: the same person who did the music for Ico also did Fullmetal Alchemist's score.

Call me Mussolini, but something about the violence of the SOtC score speaks to me on unwholesome emotional levels. But not as much as Ico's (pronounced WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEco) score. It is so very haunting. The whole thing reminds me of the song "Into the Alley" on the Japanese band Ghost's album, "Lama Rabi Rabi" (minimize your browser so as not to be distracted by the bizarre movie footage):

Now that I think about it, they really ought to score a Team Ico game.

Ah Ico...without doubt the best game ive ever played! Was beggining to wonder whether GR had forgotten all about it, what with all the Shadow of the Collossus love that said game has been getting recently (Also a great game, but not as good as Ico in my opinion.). Good to see you have redeemed yourself with this feature.

@Ampatent The correct pronounciation is E-co, but some people (Myself included) prefer to say Eye-co. It just sounds better that way.

One of my favorite games and soundtrack, you hit the nail on the head when you were talking about why that ending song is so great

A fuggin' travesty that ICO has taken this long to be featured, but you are forgiven.

After discovering that OCRemix had only two paltry (but great) remixes, I hunted the Youtubes for some. I'd like to direct everyone to two of my favorite:
    Castle in the Mist Jam
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3R22LpmS-GY&feature=PlayList&p=5050F3B3102126FB&playnext=1&index=42
    Girl In The White Dress
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFx58xDy-8U&playnext=1&videos=ov0Th0S4aHM

I'd appreciate if these two get included in the actual article, because copy-pasting links is a limiting factor for many.
