Game music of the day: Fallout 2

Welcome to GamesRadar's daily blast of all things pertaining to the ever-growing field of game music. Each post will introduce new sounds, games, composers and fan-made remixes of gaming's greatest aural achievements.

July 2, 2010

Game: Fallout 2
Song: My Chrysalis Highwayman
Composer: Mark Morgan

If ambient music is meant to transport the listener, then the Fallout 1&2 OSTs are a triumph. This track is one of the more melodic in Fallout 2, and perhaps isn't the most representative of the soundtrack as a whole, but for me, it's got immense powers of teleportation.

Your ears are especially lucky, because composer Mark Morgan recently remastered and released the entire OST. The songs are no longer available on Aural Network, where they were first released, but you can still find them elsewhere.

I couldn't choose just one song to feature, of course. Here's "Beyond the Canyon" to give you a better sample of the game's unnerving soundscapes:

Above: You sitting at your desk? NAH MAN THIS IS THE APOCALYPSE!

And just for fun, here's another great track, "Khans of the New California," which is originally from Fallout 1, in context:

I think the Fallout 3 soundtrack is great but the originals sure do beat it.

Thank you so much for this music. The first song was a treat for my ears. I hadn't played Fallout 2 in a long time and I had forgotten how amazing the audio was. I'm going to go play some Fallout. Tyler Wilde, I salute you.

Great pick, the music in Fallout 2 is awesome

Weird. IN Fallout 2, there's no music at all when I'm playing except during cutscenes, even though I make the Full installation.

Awesome! I like the twangy first one best. The second one reminds me an old "Deep Forest" CD I used to have. Both are excellent selections. Any chance I can get that game on Steam?

Man, listen to this makes me want to go play Fallout 1 and 2. I wish Fallout 3 had kept some of this music, or that I had it on PC so I could mod it in. Still, Three Dog is pretty awesome.

Hard to imagine they can make a piece of music that makes a wasteland of crime and decay even more moody.
