Game of the Month, December 2012

Winner: Far Cry 3

Read the Far Cry 3 Review

The lack of releases in December usually makes it a good time to catch up on November's massive game list, but some amazing titles came late to the holiday party last month. Among them, Ubisoft's Far Cry 3 stands on top. The expansive, pirate-infested world is full of surprises and a thrill to explore, the shooting mechanics and upgrade system are outstanding, and you'll never forget it's captivating characters, like the psychotic Vaas. Far Cry 3 definitely deserves its spot as a nominee on our Game of the Year 2012 list and as Game of the Month for December 2012.

Runner Up: Guardians of Middle-earth

The Lord of the Rings enters the MOBA space with Guardians of Middle-earth. Based on Tolkien lore, players control the series' iconic characters in traditional MOBA gameplay. The multiple classes, character progression, and loadout system keep the gameplay diverse and complex, but developer Monolith also manages to keep it accessible for newcomers of the genre.

The Far Cry 3 thing didn't surprise me at all, but Guardians of Middle Earth certainly does. I thought it was met with lackluster reviews, being awkward to play online and handling about as well as one would expect on console for a genre traditionally rooted to PCs? Either way, it's nice to see that it managed to do better than it's LEGO competitor in the LOTR market- unless that was back in November and I've just wasted 500 characters.

Am I the only personnot enamored with Vaas?

Having just finished the game, I enjoyed the parts he was present, but the game just didn't have enough Vaas moments, IMO. Plus, everything kinda went downhill once I got to the second island.

I haven't finished the game, but I do with there was more Vaas in the game. He was awesome.

I have to give Far Cry 3 credit for its ending. A lot of games these days don't have the greatest endings (Mass Effect 3, ACIII, etc...) but I thought that the ending mission was one of the strongest and most memorable parts of the game. Aside from the Vaas segments, of course.
