F.E.A.R. review

What's the point of a shooting game? Shooting things! It's weird, then, how many first-person shooters are content to settle for positively wimpy gun mechanics, with rifles that sound like pea-shooters and machine guns that take three boxes of ammo to down a small mammal. If it's not fun to shoot, what's the point? Make an RPG or something. It's much more interesting to play games in which your shotgun's barrels emit deep rumbles, bullets palpably smash into bodies and where flying gore is second only to flying lead.

Gun fetishists, it's time to put down your worn-out copy of Black, because we have just such a game in F.E.A.R. A faithful port of the 2005 PC hardware hog, F.E.A.R. feels right at home on the 360 and delivers a brief but dense dose of highly kinetic, super-frenetic gunplay.

Sure, it has some pretensions of telling a story, but it's pretty forgettable S.W.A.T. versus supernatural stuff, and the lack of subtitles can make it tricky to follow the dialogue anyway. That's okay, though, because this puts the focus exactly where it should be: on the spectacular, slow-motion firefights. F.E.A.R. features the most realistic and interesting opponents since the original Half-Life, and it's thrilling to match wits - and lead - with these guys. In most games you out-dumb the computer; in F.E.A.R., you feel like you outsmart them. And then you get to shoot 'em, which is a very fun reward.

You'll also be able to take aim at other players thanks to the extensive online features. Deathmatch, capture the flag, slow-motion matches, and many more modes are available for up to 16 players, and the action moves without a hitch. However, a lack of post-game lobbies proves rather annoying. Every time a match ends you're kicked back to the title screen, left to wonder who you just played with. That's rough. It's even worse when you play a game mode like elimination which only takes 60 seconds to play out. That makes for small bites of action.

F.E.A.R.'s other big problem is its surplus of really boring levels. Most of the game takes place in an office building, which is a few rungs below a hellish palace or a space station. As such, the scenery is a little underwhelming. The lighting is good and the levels somewhat spooky, but it's not a great showcase of the 360's graphical potential.

Regardless, the core shooting action is so strong that these complaints fall by the wayside. F.E.A.R. is a game about shooting things, and once you get your hands on its triggers, you'll find that you won't want to let go.

    solid story that i fell in love with. if only they would REMAKE it with a totally new engine and better mechanics. Redo the art definately. Work on its theatrics. Simplify its mechanics which were way to complicated sometimes. I still love it to death despite its FLAWS. as big as they may seem

    I stopped playing this a good month or so back. I will get back to it eventually, but I just found it incredibly dull. For a game titled F.E.A.R, it completely lacks any sense of it!
