Why Star Wars: The Old Republic is better than another KOTOR

Disappointed that BioWare went MMO? Here are six reasons to get excited again

Words: GamesRadar US

Your class does not decide your destiny.

“There’s a difference between morality and faction. You were born into the Empire or the Republic - the Light and Dark Sides of the Force are completely separate. All the people in one faction are not good and all the people in the other faction are not bad.

We had to humanize the Sith Empire.  We went back to the really old LucasArts games, where going to the Dark Side was like, ‘Dark greetings! It’s a good day for evil!’ There was no way that was going to work, because there has never been an evil empire in the history of the world. There have been evil regimes and there have been terrible governments that have done terrible things, but there were a ton of good people struggling against those from within.

So we’re going to put you on Korriban and train you to be a Sith. We’re going to tell you what you stand for as a Sith. Then you’re going to go out into the world and you have to decide whether you believe that. Will you do the right thing? There’s always that grey.”

The choices you make are final.

“You are going to make choices that change the entire direction of your story - just like in you did in every other BioWare game. What’s the huge difference? Now, you’re 60 hours into this huge RPG, there’s this big, big decision and, being a BioWare player, you look for the save key. And you realize there is no save key.  You’re going to make this decision and that decision is going to stand. Just like real life. You can’t take it back. You can’t say, ‘Oh did I kill you? Sorry, reboot.’ No. You’ve made your decision and the consequences are real.”

Star Wars: The Old Republic won’t waste your time.

“BioWare writers attend three months of training because we have the most important job. For the person that’s writing the Sith class story, I’ll write up on the board, “And then Darth Vader...” and I’ll fill in the plot he or she’s pitched to me: “... saves a farmer’s tractor.” I point at it, we all laugh at him and that doesn’t go into our game. You will never walk into a cantina, poke some random stranger and see if she’ll give you odd jobs for cash.  You will never get stopped on the street by someone that’s lost his cat.

If you look at the difference between even Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect – the difference in the level of quest importance and contextualization – it was huge. The bar, the threshold of what was allowed as a quest in those games, was pushed. On this one, we kept pushing it. I tell my writers to imagine the first response the player’s going to have. They’ve been tapped on the shoulder and they say ‘I’m about to go save the world - what?’ And if what you’re about to say isn’t important enough to talk about, shut up.”

eh..I guess. Individually, im still not convinced. I just dont play MMOs. I know they can be fun but im just not interested in them. I even bought guild wars, and havent played it since the first day. Im hoping this game could perhaps steer my interests in MMOs because im in love with KOTOR, but i just dont know...

looks a bit like fun, but not much till i know if itl be a AMMO (action massive multiplayer online game, such as one where it takes skill to win, not just click to attack and thats it) or a regular click to attack mmo,if its AMMO i think itl be cool, but if its not, BOOOO!

I agree with Prospero, I loved the KOTOR games, and if it's 300 years later. . . how does that same story continue?

Sounds cool. I'll get it if comes out on 360.

I'm not convinced either. I don't want to run arounf doing this really epic thing, and all of a sudden bump in to a n00b asking for credits, It'll rui the whole experience!

This story can never be compelling so long as you know that nobody around you cares. Now, if you completing the story has an effect on the game world...

Honestly, how fun is the story going to be if you have to grind for hours and hours to level up.

well, i seem to agree. I have played an MMO before and i see many ways they have improved upon the idea. first, this MMO should be an action MMO that actually requires skill to acheive anything... otherwise everybody would quit due to boredom. It is granted that once 500 years has passed things would have changed, but the story continues. This change has taken the form of the background of the MMO. Lastly i dought grinding for hours would be nessesary to level up, unless you want to avoid the story for a while, which defeats the whole purpose of the game because of the eccessive boredom involved. one more thing... i am not trying to get you to play the game, i am just trying to help you understand a little more about it from my point of veiw.
Is it just me or it this more of an essay than a comment?

when I think about the effect i have on my own world because of quests, i think of fable 2. and because I think of that, I think of the terrible ending it had. and because of the terrible ending it had, i come to the conclusion that maybe the story is more important than the environment around me. that's why kotor rocked, because it was an epic story. not much ever changed by way of atmosphere or environment. and in terms of some nob asking for gold, well the /ignore function is ever crucial, and frankly, as long as i get to run an epic, kickass story with my best buds (another fable 2 attempt that led to epic fail) in the star wars universe, i'm sold.

A multilayer Old Republic sounds like it could have some potential, but then the MMO community is usually immature, selfish, unfriendly, racist, sexist, elitist, etc. Do I really want a pay a monthly fee to grind away for hours on boring tasks (it is a staple of the genre, like it *HA* or not)? Do I really want my Old Republic experience, the fun I may or may not have, the play, everything to be decided at the whim of 12-17 year olds looking to "pwn" me for "epic lulz"? I've played quite a few MMO games, and I remember them all the same way; miserable, boring grindfests full of immature, nasty, poorly governed players. Every time I've quit playing one I've been happier for doing so.

KOTOR 3 would have been more welcome. This transparent attempt to milk my wallet by tapping into the cash cow that Blizzard has flourished in is a huge turn off.

i actually cant wait for this game. I love star wars, i love video games, i love star wars video games. i was dissapointed with Star Wars galaxies, but i am excited that bioware is making this game. I agree that little kids and immature teens and adults are pretty annoying in mmo's, but there are still serious gamers out there willing to play the game for what it is. I don't care what most people think, i can't wait to play this game.

I played, beat, and loved both KOTOR games and enjoyed them to their fullest. I thought they might have come out with another one later but to hear that its gonna be a MMO is a huge let down. I cant afford an MMO but KOTOR was such an awesome series too. I had WoW for a while and had to stop playing because of the cost and now the same thing is gonna happen with this..

KOTOR was and is still best Star Wars out there. MMO's Extra Cost, Online, No Life, Lag... BIOWARE will hopefully bring out a offline game afterwards

I've been looking to get into an MMO but every time I tried out WoW or anything else there was something missing. Apparently this game is going to be that MMO for me. I love Star Wars and I love Bioware and I love what they're doing with this game. This will be so worth putting all that time in because not only are you playing a fun game but you're immersed in a universe that is actually recognizable and means something to you (or at least to me). The Star Wars universe is way more interesting and has a richer history than Azeroth imo but that's just me. Anyway, I'm so excited for this game!

looks good, but like Mass Effect, probably won;t be a game for me

interesting side not, about a game where choices affect the out come... my Capcha Code is "moral seldom"
