WARNING: Far Cry 2 is still a broken game

Six months later, Ubisoft's FPS contains a game-ending bug with no end in sight

On October 14, 2008 Far Cry 2 went gold - meaning the game was fully completed and sent to printers. One week later on October 21, 2008 Far Cry 2 was released in North America by Ubisoft. With an average Metacritic score of 85 - across the 360, PS3 and PC platforms - Far Cry 2 has received praise for emergent gameplay in an open world African setting. With a pretty kick ass multiplayer mode and rather robust map editor included in each version, it’s not hard to see why Far Cry 2 is a triumph in the FPS genre. We sat in our room looking at the game on our shelf the other night and couldn’t figure out why the game we wanted to play for months wasn’t currently in our 360. And then we remembered the bad news: we were playing it, and then we got stuck. Far Cry 2 contains severe game-ending bugs in every version available.

The other bad news? Ubisoft and developer Ubisoft Montreal have not released any sort of official statement or humble apology - outside of forum community developers desperately trying to save face - to the gamers who purchased the game at $60 (it’s being sold at $39.99 now for PS3 and 360).

We couldn’t find any hard numbers, but in a press release dated November 12, 2008 put out by Ubisoft, the company claimed one million units sold worldwide at retail in less than 3 weeks of release. Imagine how well the game sold through the holidays and to now, April 2009.

So what of these game-ending bugs? They all lie within the numbers: 27 percent, 62 percent, 73 percent, 88 percent. These are the most common percentage completes reported by forum users where their game has gone tits up. The issues include: the game freezing on the opening loading screens, the game freezing on the way to an objective, not being able to access missions through your partners, and the always handy times when you save your partner from certain death… only for him to get up and kill you instantly.

The most insidious aspect of many of the show-stopping bugs involves a critical mission-giving NPC just disappearing from the world. However, since you can do many missions in any order you want, it’s possible to not even know an NPC has disappeared until long afterward, and for many players the bug isn’t clearly apparent. Many forum posts ask “What have I missed?” or “What am I doing wrong?”

I never realized this game was so broken, thanks for the heads up. I was going to get it since it dropped 20 dollars, but I guess I'll hold until the supposed patch is released.

Great article, very informative and helpful, keep up the good work.

I experienced a glitch like that when i would walk into a house to get my next mission and the guy who was supposed to give it to me would just look at me and not give me anything...

Luckily i did a side quest and returned and it was fixed... (That was the only bug i ever got but then again i sold the game before i finished because it got boring)

I too was going to pick this game up and thankfully I saw this article because frankly, I seem to attract game-ending glitches...

Guess I will be waiting on this game until it is fixed.

hah-i had a friend shoot me after i saved him. i had saved just as i was getting him up. i just ended up shooting him and continuing without a care-after all he did shoot at me. i'm just thankful that i had a shotgun, i would have got pretty pissed otherwise.

ha i bought this game and played like 2 hours of it and found out it was pretty boring I then traded it to my friend for fable 2, mercs 2, burnout paradise and shaun white snowboarding! lol
Fishow753  - 7 months 24 days ago
I must be incredibly lucky, for I have never encountered a single bug while playing the game

Maybe its broken on the 360 but I finished the the ps3 version. It took me over 50 hours and I didn't come across a single glitch. I did think the multi-player was lacking and several flaws. But to call this a broken game is huge misstatement, at least based on my ps3 version this game deserves high praise and is a 8 or 9.

Ok but you have to understand that regardless of what console a multiplatform game is released on, having the game this broken is unexceptable on any grounds.

If you honestly think that the article writers are lying then think what you want but the simple fact is that they have documented this crap and have statements and facts to back themselves up. I'm sorry that you feel that they are talking bad about your precious game but this shit is rediculious and IS GROUNDS TO be reported about to the correct people.

Whatever, fanboyism bores me...
djdue  - 7 months 24 days ago
My facts are I played the game for over 50 hours and I didn't see any bugs. Therefore the game was not broken to me. Nothing beats personal experience, you can add me as friend and look and my trophy list to see I have more than 60 percent of the trophies so I'm telling the truth.

Looks like Fishow didn't come across any glitches either. That makes two.
djdue  - 7 months 24 days ago
Its not fanboyism, I'm just trying to figure out why the writer's version is screwed but my is fine. Maybe just the 360 version is busted. Did the writer observe these bugs on the ps3. Maybe to be more accurate the article should be titled Far Cry 2 on 360 is broken.

Just because you didn't encounter any glitches doesn't mean they don't exist. And according to those forum posts, its other users' personal experiences that the game is in dire need of serious fixing.

Also, a direct quote from the article: “ And to be fair, the bugs don’t occur in every single copy of the game.”
djdue  - 7 months 24 days ago
That's the dumbest qoute ever- "bugs don't occur in every single copy" WTF does that mean? So the game has bugs that don't show up in ever copy? It makes no sense, and leads me even more to call BS.
Amnesiac  - 7 months 24 days ago
Again, did you follow the link to the PS3 problems thread in the forums? Obviously, SOMEONE out there has had problems with the PS3 version of the game.
djdue  - 7 months 24 days ago
Yeah if look the PS3 complaints are about the multiplayer not about the single player which is what this article about. Back to the qoute- isn't a bug in a game universal? If a game has a bug it would show up in every version. I call BS.

A quote from the forum.

I have a game breaking glitch*possible spoiler*on the mission of saving the barge the captain falls through the top level of the ship and will not speak to me to finish my mission and has worked for 2 different character/save games it happens on act 2 48% finished game on the ps3

Another

In the mission where you must intimidate the Chiefs brother in that hotel in the middle of a lake, I get up to the guy, hit the button to intimidate him, and then it just stops. It doesn't freeze - the guy is still shuffling, and will even walk away - but I can't move. I can't walk, I can't turn, I can't select weapons, I can't get the map, I can't even pause - I have to hit the Ps button to bring up the pause screen. What the hell do I do?

Both from single player. This is onthe first 3 of 20 something pages. To answer your question, its not that glitches aren't on certain copies {that quote is worded poorly, I admit}. The problem is that the triggers for them are pretty random so how many you get really is down to luck.

haha, the comment section for this article has become a debate between Amnesiac and djdue. i agree with Amnesiac, a bug might or might not happen, and it is all up to dumb luck. in order for a bug to 'activate' certain things have to happen at certain times, most of which are invisible, so again, it is all up to dumb luck.
Personally, i got Far Cry 1 when it released, and hated it so much i sold it after only a few days, so i didnt bother to even by Far Cry 2.
