E3 2010: Mortal Kombat's excessive gore - uncut

Mortal Kombat is making a big effort to earn respect this time around. With Street Fighter having cleaned up twice already this generation, the faded gore-'em-up has a lot to do if it's going to escape its current 'Hey, didn't you used to be famous once?' plight. And it's setting out to do said lot via a new, deeper combat system, stripped back 2D gameplay, and an insane level of carpet-ruining multilation. A level of mutilation that may genuinely be a peak for the series. A level of mutilation that the official E3 trailer didn't allow you to see. But now you can.

You might recall that the aforementioned trailer ended with Kung Lao about to pull a deeply unfortunate Sub-Zero over a rapidly-spinning bladed hat, thereby turning him into a two-for-one Sub-Zero special offer. Being a big tease (and probably having to deal with all sorts of inconvenient legalities), the trailer cut off at that point. But via this footage from an E3 presentation, we can now bring you all of it. Trust us, MK is raising the bar this time. Then slamming it through someone's eye socket and twisting it around until their skull breaks open.

So what do you reckon? Interest piqued in MK again? Are you a die-hard fan currently whooping with excitement? Do you need to see more of its much-vaunted deeper gameplay to decide if it can compete? Or will Street Fighter always just be plain better? Let us know in the comments, or shout loudly at our thriving social portals on Facebook and Twitter.

I've always preferred Street Fighter as a franchise but I can't turn away from Mortal Kombat. The franchise has always been flawed with shallow fighting mechanics that I hope will be addressed in this new one.

@philipshaw you fucking troll. This game looks amazing! I can not wait for this game! I dont give a shit what the graphics look like, the gameplay goes back to its roots, which I can not be more happy about!
  • philipshaw - June 22, 2010 10:47 a.m.

    The graphics still look awful

  • bioshocker - June 21, 2010 11:10 p.m.

Let's hope this makes GoW (take your pick) look like a paper cut :D

I'll be looking forward to this based on the utterly awesome description that Mr. Elston gave in TalkRadar 106... hopefully though, the game will contain 100% LESS George Lopez cutting into your review time ; )

This game is going to own all the fighting scene next year, plain and simple.
  • QWERTYCommander - June 21, 2010 8:55 p.m.

    God damn.
  • aperson789 - June 21, 2010 8:46 p.m.

I think MK is way better than street fighter in every way. Just street fighter is ju so boring and I hate all the moves and characters.
  • Felixthecat - June 21, 2010 8:30 p.m.

SO FUCKING EXCITED. Mortal Kombat is the greatest. I just hope Mr. Boon and his team puts no gimmicks in MK9 AT ALL. The X-Ray thing could be counted as one, but that actually looks cool
  • ventanger - June 21, 2010 8:17 p.m.

Hopefully we see something more for Sub-Zero other than the same 'freeze the guy and then shatter him' thing that he always does. I want something unique and fitting for my favorite murderer.
  • GamesRadarBrettElston - June 21, 2010 7:57 p.m.

The montage they showed us at E3 was so vicious... just about every other Fatality was as gory or worse.
  • batman5273 - June 21, 2010 7:05 p.m.

    looks bad ass!
  • Evil_AppleJuice - June 21, 2010 6:15 p.m.

I think street fighter has always been "better" cause its for anyone who would like to play or even learn how to play a videogame. There is infinite replayability, and little to immense learning curve. MK is fantastic, but can only be for a mature audience who have patience enough to learn difficult characters and combos. And since I'm 19 now, hell ya imma buy MK!!! ReCAPTCHA: benzecry 363... Wtf?

You asked if Street Fighter will always be better, and yes, it will always be better (merely my opinion). Although I have always loved Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter is just more...fluid? how their combos/moves can just go together. The closest Mortal Kombat got to it was part 2. Part 3's Killer Instinct insta-combos were kind of canned combos, I suppose. But it's kind of like arguing whether a hot blonde is better than a hot brunette. Buying MK day 1, bringing a brunette along.
  • Cyberninja - June 21, 2010 4:34 p.m.

that was cool i guess but shouldnt he look more beat up when he died
  • LizarDAZZLE - June 21, 2010 4:34 p.m.

hahah, amazing. It was made even better when just after the video ended, the advertizement started, so just after seeing his mutilated corpse, I saw in a black screen, "Wii."
  • Tatts4Life - June 21, 2010 4:18 p.m.

Fianlly an MK game for the new generation systems.
  • MisterAdequate - June 21, 2010 4:08 p.m.

I dunno, I think they need to redo the voice acting. It sounded more like he was pulling a band-aid off than being buzzsawed in half, groin-first.
