Cracked infographic takes a shot at FPS cliches

Virtual soldiers have been waging digital warfare for some time now, so it's only natural that some of the umpteen thousands of games dedicated to modern warfare are starting to feel a little similar. Agree? Disagree? Have a peak at's how-to guide for 'Developing a Modern Warfare FPS Game' and then tell us if the latest 'Modern Conflict: Brotherhood of Retribution 3' is still as groundbreaking as you think:

The full infographic can be seen at

Criticizing one genre for its cliches may be a tad unfair considering 99.97% of modern games are a melting pot of repurposed plot points, themes and game mechanics. Still, Cracked does make a few points, even if most of the infographic takes a birds eye view at the genre.

Maybe it's time to start trying something new like making a game about war in space? With marines. And lasers. Just a thought.

What about the fact that by the end you have to find out that it was actually the good guys who were the bad guys all along? Or that you have to be framed as a terrorist by the shadowy evil governement organization guys and kill them to save everyone, while still being seen as a terrorist in the end?

Looks like they fixed some problems with the article. When I read it yesterday, it was absolutely packed to the gills with spelling errors.

Sounds about right. Every time I get into a video game helicopter, it crashes. Every time. OK, maybe not every time, but every video game helicopter.

Huh and i was gonna read this article too once i was done reading GR.
  • Spybreak8 - January 7, 2011 3:08 a.m.

Sooo... it works for COD but when you throw in headcrabs things are a bit different. Well I guess the helicopter still crashes in that game haha (although you do the crashing/destruction though).

sorry for three posts in a row but had to add one thing, @dreamweaverPL... have you ever commented on a story before with anything worth saying? apparently not, i looked at your previous posts, you are just a sorry elitist who looks for any chance to get someone to answer you because you probably dont have any one in your life that will. and i can save you the response, you'll say, "hey man, i have a girlfriend, i bet you dont have anyfriends at all loser" saved you the time on that so your welcome
  • DreamWeaverPL - January 7, 2011 12:21 a.m.

Seriously, do Americans need to point out such obvious things? I laugh at you.

recaptcha: crencer... cancer's evil twin brother
  • mahabat - January 7, 2011 12:09 a.m.

they cant all be original! just like not ANY helicopter can land! haha it would take all of one second for someone to decide they wanted the helicopter to land instead of explode and/or crash. also it would take less time and no one would see it coming.

Pretty short inforgraphic (yes I clicked on the full page link). The first part about the covers made it all worth it.
  • celticsfan645 - January 6, 2011 10:47 p.m.

@GoldenMe That sounds LIKE the GREATEST GAME EVER. If there is a powerup that lets you upgrade the the exploding dolphins into Sharks that breath Naplam and crap nitroglycerin, then im in

I guess developers don't have much choice when they only have 18 months to develop a game, doesn't leave much time to develop fresh ideas. But I suppose when games like Black Ops sells however many millions it has, they don't need too. Rather a sad state of affairs really.
  • skeletalbutton - January 6, 2011 10:34 p.m.

Yes! this reminds me of that video by the onion a few years back.
  • Genericpenisjoketista - January 6, 2011 10:27 p.m.

Too short and specific to be funny. It would be funnier if they had more examples than just Modern Warfare, Metal of Honor, and Battlefront. (RB6:V doesn't make more than one appearence and it's not a military shooter)
  • farsided - January 6, 2011 10:26 p.m.

But since second person is the form of "you", would you just be taking the view of whatever your bullets are hitting and therefore never know what the hero character is firing at? ...and while you may not currently be granted mini dolphin rounds, I do know of a land shark gun you may be fond of.
  • EwoksTasteLikeChicken - January 6, 2011 10:24 p.m.

    I think that's pretty funny.
  • GoldenMe - January 6, 2011 10:22 p.m.

TYPO: Too much to ask for? ALso, I claim First I suppose. I guess I can set that First on fire as well.
