Billy Mitchell retakes Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr world records, still can't resist being an ass

Those of you holding out hope that Billy Mitchell really was all talk and no game have a bit less ammo today. The controversial restaurateur/ career self-absorbed egomaniac painted as the villain in the 2007 documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters beat high scores in both Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. over the weekend for the inaugural ceremony of the International Video Game Hall of Fame in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Above: This man sells hot sauce. And dreams.

The event, held in the ancestral home of gaming scoreboard hub Twin Galaxies, showcased, among other things, a score-focused tournament for a variety of games from gamedom's past and present. While he didn't complete the high scores on-hand at the event, Mitchell arrived packing a verified videotape of the scoring attempts- which clock in at 2 hours 42 minutes for Donkey Kong and 3 hours 58 minutes for Donkey Kong Jr.

The two games Mitchell set out to conquer have plagued his persona since King of Kong was released, thus making the opportunity to attain the high scores for an event that partly honored him (as well as other historically high scoring gamers) all the sweeter. The final scores of the Donkey Kong and Jr. were 1,062,800 and 1,270,900, respectively.

Though the previous high score in Donkey Kong was not held by King of Kong rival Steve Weibe (it was actually held by Hank Chien since March of this year), Mitchell walked away from DK just 100 points after beating the previous record. Smarmy? According to Mitchell, "Some say I'm being cocky. Some say I'm being lazy. I say, I'm being Billy Mitchell."

I feel the need to go watch King of Kong again.

@Redeater Yes, I've seen and loved King of Kong. It's been a while and some of the details are fuzzy for me, but I remember Steve Wiebe's family loving him. And the movie obviously focuses on the time that he plays Donkey Kong, but who's to say how much time he spends with his son (feel free to correct me if the movie does tell how much time he plays)? Speaking from experience, my dad was away from the house a lot when I was a kid because he's a trucker, but that didn't keep me from loving him. And Wiebe is at least in the house, there for his son if he needs them. If you feel the need to respond to this, message me on the site, I'm not gonna check these pages' comments again.

If the 'verified videotape' is anything like the one he submitted in 'king of kong' it shouldn't be admissable. he obviously faked it then and there's no reason to think he owuldn't do the same again. Steve Weibe deserved the record. Can't say the same for Billy Mitchell.

What an incredibly greasy and weasel-like douchebag. Tape my ass. If I was in charge of that geriatric high score club, I would say "Beat the high score on this arcade machine where everyone can see you, or it didn't happen." This pathetic excuse of a man redefines the word "loser".
  • Redeater - August 10, 2010 4:03 a.m.

@Defguru7777 Have you seen King of Kong? I hope Steve Weibe is happy that while his kid is growing up he is in the garage playing King Kong. Well while other kids are learning baseball and football from their fathers at least he can say "Hey at least my dad was a runner up for King Kong". It's ONLY a game

Does this guy have any idea how movie villainish he is?
  • Maverick82102 - August 10, 2010 3:04 a.m.

Look at that picture. Looks like he's trying to take a dump.
  • alienkid771 - August 10, 2010 2:05 a.m.

Mitchell really is a dick. I watched the documentary, and when Steve Weibe showed up to that arcade where they were supposed to go head to head, Mitchell sent a damn tape rather than show up. He's a stuck up f*ck that thinks he's some kind of Kong royalty
  • Genericpenisjoketista - August 10, 2010 12:28 a.m.

As much of a dick he's made out to be, I gotta say, I really admire the man. The same kind of way that I would admire... say, Patrick Bateman.

I think that mullet is like a x5 point multiplier... unfair advantage.
  • Defguru7777 - August 10, 2010 12:18 a.m.

@Redeater Everyone has their own life and makes their own choices. If they're happy with it, then that should be enough for anyone else. I can't help but respect Billy Mitchell. He may come off as an ass, but he has the skills to back up his claims.
  • Felixthecat - August 9, 2010 11:56 p.m.

Billy Mitchell > Chuck Norris. "Some say I'm being cocky. Some say I'm being lazy. I say, I'm being Billy Mitchell." That's only something a badass would say, or possibly John Marston.
  • lovinmyps3 - August 9, 2010 11:40 p.m.

    What an ass.
  • alexcook - August 9, 2010 10:32 p.m.

To me it seems like he was putting out a challenge by only just beating it. Call it what you will, but it was fun seeing some of these gamers this last weekend. I actually live in Ottumwa.
  • revrock - August 9, 2010 10:30 p.m.

I don't care what anyone thinks... Billy Mitchell is old school cool! That quote rules. He is like a pro-wrestler of video games! Rock on Billy Mitchell! Aqua Net, Pac Man, and talkin' trash.
  • Metroidhunter32 - August 9, 2010 10:27 p.m.

If you're going to go for a high score, go until you can't. The guy isn't being cocky, it's just stupidity. Someone is going to read this and have it broken in a week.
  • bamb0o-stick - August 9, 2010 10:19 p.m.

I feel like I just got hot sauce thrown in my eyes.
  • Redeater - August 9, 2010 10:18 p.m.

I watched King of Kong and it was hard to believe that this garbage even exists. I mean I'm all for old school gaming but damn....these people have no life.
  • 510BrotherPanda - August 9, 2010 10:18 p.m.

He still looks the part of a jerk. And he has an ugly nub thumb. Why do people get so caught up on scores? I thought the word 'game' in video game meant fun.
