Apparently Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D save data CAN be erased. If you think it's really worth it...

Hmmm, Capcom, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, save files, no deleting, yes? Brutal attempt to bring down the trade-in market by ruining all the fun of a score-attack game, no? Bad, bad Capcom, very bad. Hmmm, yes, bad.

Well that seems to be the predominant reaction to the impossibility of reseting high-score data on Resi's 3DS debut. And while Capcom has explained the decision in terms of an arcade game design philosophy and stated that such a situation is unlikely to happen again, many are still rather peeved.

Well if it matters that much to you, it's just come to our attention that there is apparently a way of deleting saves stored on the cartridge, albeit via a bit of third-party kit. According to a reader tip sent to Siliconera, the NDS Adaptor Plus is a little USB device which allows you to back up and manage your DS and 3DS saves via a PC. It also allows save deletion. Personally, I don't have a huge problem with perma-saves on a score-attack game like Mercenaries 3D, as if anything, having a boatload of high scores already on a second-hand cartridge just gives you extra impetus to thrash away all the hard work of the previous owner, allowing you to declare victory over his trifling efforts on his very own cartridge. Or perhaps I'm just vindictive. Either way though, if you want to get rid of save files, this thing might work.

And if you don't want for fork out for one, we've come up with another, simpler method that might work:

Though we don't recommend that you use it because it will very probably just bugger up your cartridge forever.

    I myself don't mind too much if a developer tries to combat used games sales. I think what they should have done, is keep this a perma-save game, and after a year (or whenever they stop supporting the game financially) they release a patch that gives you a "delete save game" option. Then again, I never thought of your "thrash away all the hard work of the previous owner" idea either. I happen to like that one the most.

    Magnets don't work on flash memory, since flash memory is not magnetic. The only way to remove the data without using a USB device like this would be to simply destory the flash, and I'm sure most people don't want to render the game unplayable. xD

    still think people are making mountains out of molehills about this, if you were going to buy you Shouldn't care about it having permasaves seeing as a new copy would cost you all of $5 more

    I actually would find the positives in buying it second hand and beating the previous owners' scores. As for second hand copies, you can't help people if they want to sell their game. Here's a good example for Capcom on how to tackle that problem: Resident Evil 4. I own it on multiple consoles and I'm going to get the HD version. Would I sell them? Fu** no it's a great game. If you frequent second hand stores alot you see a trend of good games being hard to find. Infact years ago I searched stores week after week for Shining Force 3, my relentless search paid off and I'm thankful for it, I still have it. So if people are gonna play Mercenaries 3D and sell it shortly after then they obviously didn't find it worth their money. Fair play.

    Personally I don't mind the not deleting saves issue. People ask why people would buy the game in the first place but obviously they're not involved in the Resident Evil universe. And no playing Resident Evil 5 doesn't count.

    I can't believe people will buy something that's essentially a mini-game. It should have been included with the upcoming Revelations title. It's a shame that these "Hardcore" 3DS games will be nothing more than casual fan-fare.

    Maybe I'll do that to erase my save before selling it to Gamestop so that the asshole who's going to cheat and make me hand him/her 100% completion a reason to waste money on a new copy of every game instead of a cheaper used game. Sucker.

    If Capcom (and other companies) really want to take the sting out of used game sales, Gamestop and companies that regularly make a good chunk of their earnings from used game sales should try to come up with an agreement whereas a percentage of every used game sale goes back to the publisher. Target the person/entity who can most afford it, instead of making gamers who purchase used games feel like they're hurting the industry.

    Wow Vane, way to fail at the hate bandwagon. I completely missed out on this whole story. I've already purchased the game, used, with a large majority of the content already locked and a slew of high scores already in place. I didn't care though, when I was buying it I knew what I was getting in a handheld Mercenaries game. The unlockable characters who were already unlocked? If you hadn't already a clue as to who was going to appear in this game, than this game already isn't aimed at you. After a day of solid playing, none of the previous scores even existed, so that point was moot as well. I will replay this my damn self, two or three years down the line when it's become forgotten on my shelf and I cycle back to it. And it will be new again and I'll just beat my own high scores... With that said... Really Capcom? No 'Data Reset' tucked away at the back of the options? You just [i]knew[/i] that haters were gonna hate.

Not saying this isn't an interesting idea, but there is a major problem with it. How do they police this? You think that the publishers are going to trust Gamestop to correctly report how many used games they buy and sell? Trust me, if they tried this, suddenly places like Gamestop would be "selling only 4 copies of used games this month. Trust us!" VaneTrago: "The unlockable characters who were already unlocked? No, the point is the idea of using them in the first place, as well as the idea that they are rewards/incentives for progress made. Ultimately, though, the point of unlocking them is not just to say "ooh, I wonder what is next!" (I had a better example, but can't think of it right now) (Note: production art and those type of things that you unlock are a bit of a grey area. Sure, you unlock them just to see them, and not use them. But few people look at them more than once. Not-coincidentally, these are the worst unlockables a game can have.)
