20 Kickass Mods

Dec 19, 2007

One of the best things about gaming on the PC is that mods can breathe new life you’re your older titles. Unfortunately, weeding out the good ones from the half-assed incomplete productions takes a ton of time. Luckily, we’ve picked out some of our favorite add-ons, conversions, and fan-made tweaks that will make your old games seem brand new. So dust off your library and read on for the best mods made by gamers for gamers. Just do us a small favor and don’t click on the Naked tab if you’re under 18.

Half-Life 2: Source mods
If The Orange Box was your first introduction to Half-Life 2 and Steam, then you’re in for a real treat, because you can enjoy high quality mods long after you’ve grown tired of Portal, Episode 2, and Team Fortress 2, making The Orange Box an even greater bargain.

Insect Infestation
This is the most buggy mod we’ve ever played (but in a good way). Insect Infestation is a team-based multiplayer mod with ants and termites instead of the usual space marines and aliens. The goal is to kill the other team’s queen. If you’re up for some gun free killing sprees, hit up the link below.

DB: Source
This ambitious multiplayer mod injects Half-Life 2 with a ton of Goku goodness. Expect to see the main characters from the beginning of the series like young Gohan, Vegeta, and Piccolo. However, the team working on this mod plans to eventually add characters from the rest of the epic anime/manga series. If all goes well, you’ll eventually be able to play characters from the Namek, Android, Cell Games, and Buu chapters as well. A new update is scheduled to release on Dec 22, 2007. In the meantime, hit up the link below and join the fun.

Above: You can expect to be bombarded with the usual online trash talk. But who cares? It's GoldenEye

GoldenEye: Source
The developers of this mod are on a mission to recreate GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64, the game they call “the first best multiplayer first-person shooter ever made.” But don’t expect GoldenEye: Source to be exactly the same as its N64 predecessor with Half-Life 2 graphics. The development team also wants to add everything they can to make GoldenEye: Source more fun without losing what made the original so great. The mod isn’t finished, but you can test drive the beta for some new school nostalgia by clicking the link below.

SourceForts
SourceForts is multiplayer capture the flag mod with the usual classes and weapons. But it has a unique twist. Each round begins with a Build Phase, where players use the gravity gun to fortify their side of the map with blocks and panels of various sizes. It’s this special hook that sets SourceForts apart from the crowd. Skilled players can use all kinds of dirty tricks by creating structures that launch grenades across the screen, crawl tunnels that slow approaching enemies, and walls with slits that let you fire through them.

As far as we’re concerned SourceForts is one of the most creative Half-Life 2 multiplayer mods out there. Check out the trailer below and download the mod. Once you’ve gotten your ass kicked a few times, you can head to SourceForts' site for some tips on how to be a better builder.

Zombie Panic for Half-Life 1
This multiplayer mod puts an interesting twist on team deathmatch. It starts off with one zombie vs. the rest of the human survivors on the server. Every time a zombie manages to take down one of the survivors, that person becomes one of the living dead. You can only play Zombie Panic with the original Half-Life at this time, and it’s pretty tough to find a server with enough players to get a good game going. But the Zombie Panic team is hard at work on Zombie Panic: Source for Half-Life 2 and we expect the servers to fill back up again once they release the first playable version.
