Pacific Rim 2 dropped from Universal's release schedule, but not dead in the water

Earlier this month we had heard that Pacific Rim 2 had been 'indefinitely paused' (what a polite way of putting it) by Universal. Well, the studio has now officially removed the film from its release schedule. However, the accompanying press release suggests that all might not be lost for the proposed sequel just yet…

“Legendary’s Pacific Rim 2, originally scheduled for release on August 4, 2017, will be redated at a later time,” reads the official blurb. “The filmmakers, Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to having Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to 2013’s Pacific Rim, which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of Pacific Rim 2 so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.”

Fingers (kinda) crossed, then. In the meantime, director Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that his next film will be a “small, independently financed movie” in an interview with Variety. That said, he too is remaining hopeful on Pacific Rim 2, telling the outlet that, “as far as I’m concerned, it’s not cancelled, just postponed”.
