Stranger Things trailer brings mystery, horror and a dose of Spielberg to Netflix

Kids charging around on BMXs, shady government officials skulking around, frantic wide-eyed parents clinging to old rotary phones. That's not just me listing all the hallmarks of an '80s Steven Spielberg movie - these throwbacks are front and center in the trailer for Netflix's upcoming series Stranger Things.

The show is set in small-town America and stars Winona Ryder as a panic-stricken mother whose son goes missing under mysterious circumstances. It's only once she involves the authorities that she realises that far more sinister things are afoot. There's a fair whiff of Stephen King in there too. Check out the trailer below:

It's an absolute perfect mix of paranoia and straight-up WTF? moments. Seriously, who or what is moving that door latch/flipping that massive truck? Throw in a nice hefty dose of 1980s nostalgia (that title screen, the fact that Ryder's in it) and Stranger Things is shaping up to be one of this summer's must-see series.

Starring Winona Ryder, Matthew Modine, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, and Caleb McLaughlin, season one of Stranger Things arrives in its entirety on Netflix July 15th.
