Resident Evil Outbreak – 2003 – PS2
In the early 2000s Resident Evil lost its way. The only game we’ll look at from these years is Outbreak, which (with its sequel), has the distinction of being the only online RE game. They sucked, of course, being a technical mess and far too short - and the laggy online barely worked, such is the PS2 Online service. But they do offer a hint as to how the new game may work. Outbreak’s maps were specifically designed to be played in co-op, and we’re sure RE 5 will follow a system not unlike that of Gears of War, with players providing cover for the other. We’re sure there’ll be moments where you’re cut off from your partner too, creating tension so thick you can cut it with a chainsaw. Outside the main game? In RE 4, you only got the best mode (Mercenaries) after completing the game. A variation of this, with online leaderboards? Capcom, deal us in. Right now.
