Today's the day the PS5 base price jumps all the way up to $599 (for a Digital Edition, no less). That's right, April 2 was the date set by Sony for all of its consoles to skyrocket up the price scale - but Amazon didn't seem to get the memo.
The retailer still has both the PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Disc consoles at their previous MSRPs at the time of writing, giving anyone who slept on the last few days of stock hunting a reprieve before those numbers jump up. I've been tracking PS5 deals throughout several of these price jumps, and I'll tell you it's not uncommon for these older rates to stick around.
Amazon is likely working through its inventory, clearing the stock it received at a lower price point before bumping up numbers on new units. Nobody knows exactly when those cheaper units will run dry, but I don't normally see previous prices sticking around for more than a few days.
The PS5 Digital Edition is still available for $499 at Amazon, before it eventually climbs all the way up to $599. That's some serious cash for a device that locks you into PlayStation's digital storefront for game purchases.
If you want to keep your discs in action, the PS5 Disc console is also still available for its previous rate at Amazon. You're paying $549 here, where you'll soon be facing a $649 MSRP.
Sony announced its PS5 price increases last week in a blog post, bumping the Digital Edition up to $599, the Disc version to $649 and the Pro model all the way up to $899.99. It's only that last model that's seeing stock difficulties at Amazon today - the site notes its price is 'higher than typical', no kidding.
The boost in MSRP comes after months of component shortages have squeezed supplies of crucial PS5 parts. The rush to arm AI brands with RAM has meant manufacturers have been unable to secure their own usual stocks and supplies, driving prices up for both brands and, ultimately, consumers.
While things looked to be evening out a little at the start of the week, the end of this big component surge isn't quite in sight yet. While this is the second price increase we've seen on the PS5, then, it's looking like a marker of yet more expensive tech to come in the future.
