Once we finally got to the gameplay, we found the standard strategy-RPG fare - an isometric grid with each team deployed at opposite sides of the board. The default controls are stylus only (although you can switch to traditional controls in the options menu), which we're happy to see included, but prove to be awkward at times. When a unit is obscured by other units around it, it can be difficult to select with the stylus. Unfortunately, there's no way to adjust the camera angle to alleviate this problem.
Overall the stylus controls felt a bit awkward and unnecessary, given that the layout is very similar to other S-RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire Emblem, that work fine without stylus controls. Still, it's nice that both options are included, and we hope that the minor kinks are resolved in the final version.
One last thing to note is the curious inclusions of intermissions after each battle featuring a character named Kopin. The art style in these intermissions is completely different than the rest of the game, and the subject matter seemingly random. Is there some deeper meaning to this pudgily cute mascot? Only time will tell...
Luminous Arc is set to hit shelves in August, so stay tuned for our review. Until then, hit the Images tab above to check out more screens.
