Yesterday's latest Rockstar Games leak may have provided some explanation as to why GTA 6 hasn't been announced for PC, even if it's probably only a matter of time until it arrives on the platform.
Rockstar Games was recently hacked again, with the GTA and Red Dead Redemption maker confirming that "a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach." Yesterday, the hacking group responsible said it planned to release the information since its demands hadn't been met. Now, it appears that's exactly what's happened, with alleged financial records circulating online.
Amongst this is the apparent weekly revenue earned from GTA Online, which claims that Rockstar earns significantly more from all its console platforms than it does PC – at least, when it comes to its online multiplayer game. PS5 stands as the highest earner, reportedly bringing in $4.5 million a week, followed by Xbox Series X at $1.8 million, PS4 at $947k, Xbox One at $918k, and finally, PC at $264k.
Article continues belowIf this is accurate, then it's a solid indication of where the majority of the GTA playerbase is spending, and while obviously there are still plenty of fans on PC, they seemingly only make up a small percentage of the overall group, accounting for just over 3% of those total earnings (apparently, a whopping $8.4 million a week).
As such, you can understand why GTA 6's launch is being prioritized to come to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S first and foremost – it's seemingly where most of its sales are likely to come from, and let's face it, if the sleuths were right about the game's budget potentially going up to $5 billion, it's in the studio's interest to start making that back as soon as possible.
And, to be fair, a later PC launch is nothing new for Rockstar. It took around a year and a half for GTA 5 to come to PC after its console launch, while Red Dead Redemption 2 players on PC had a year to wait. Rockstar still hasn't said anything about a PC launch for GTA 6, but the assumption amongst fans is that it'll probably follow the same pattern of simply arriving a while after the console release.
We'll just have to wait and see if and when Rockstar announces any PC plans for GTA 6. It's set to arrive on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, and it's worth keeping in mind that neither GTA 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2's PC announcements came before the games were actually out – in fact, Red Dead's came only a month before its arrival on PC. In short, I wouldn't advise getting your hopes up for any news on that anytime soon.
