Acclaimed climbing adventure Cairn is getting free DLC next month
It's time to return to the mountain, as hit climbing game Cairn is getting free DLC to expand Ava's adventure on Kami - and add in some new features too.
The On the Trail: Deep Water DLC, which was revealed with a short trailer as part of the Future Games Show Summer Showcase, features protagonist Ava negotiating the familiar slopes of the imposing mountain Kami. Wading through knee-deep snow, you also see her bedding down for the night and preparing a meal in her trusty tent. And then there's what happens when a climb doesn't go entirely to plan.
But after Ava's picked herself back up, we get to see a bit more of what On the Trail has to offer. Mostly, that's new climbs in some somewhat more temperate environments. But better weather doesn't necessarily mean an easier journey, which is definitely shown off when we see Ava almost fully upside-down as she wrestles with a coastal archway.
Ava's not the only one who makes an appearance in the trailer, however. If you've played Cairn for yourself, you'll recognize Marco, who serves as something of a companion at various points throughout the story, even if Ava isn't always particularly keen to see him. Now, you'll be able to take on Cairn in Marco's shoes, as he's introduced as a second playable character.
Cairn emerged as an early indie hit this year with excellent reviews, so I'm pleased to see there's more mountain to conquer thanks to this DLC. The main game is out now on PS5 and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, and you'll be able to access all the new content for free from July 23.
