Argentinian writer-director Pablo Trapero follows up freewheeling road flick Familia Rodante with this poignant study of a man consumed by guilt and grief. After an accident involving himself, his wife and young daughter, Buenos Aires interior designer Santiago (Guillermo Pfening) winds up 2,000 kilometres away in Patagonia. Burying himself in manual work at a decrepit airport, he spends his spare time hunting and boozing, but remains haunted by the ghosts of the past.
Drained of bright colour, the film’s snowscapes mirror Santiago’s inner desolation. Impressively acted and compassionately observed, it hovers intriguingly between reality and dream-state.
