Bee Movie stings the US box office

It appears that not everyone was completely sick of Jerry Seinfeld and his endless TV promotion for DreamWorks Animation’s Bee Movie. The cartoon has been so successful this week that it’s actually jumped back to the top of the charts in this, its second weekend of release.

American Gangster, which ruled the roost last weekend, dropped to second and has made $80.7 million so far. That meant that Vince Vaughn’s new comedy Fred Claus had to settle for third, with $19.2 million. It remains to be seen if it can keep up the pace across Christmas.

Tom Cruise, meanwhile, saw the first film from his re-launched United Artists, Lions For Lambs, open as something of a disappointment with a paltry $6.7 million from 2,215 cinemas. That put it just ahead of Dan In Real Life, which is holding steady with a drop of just one place and a running total of $30.6 million.

Saw IV found itself in sixth place, adding $5 million to a total of $58 million. And The Rock’s Disney comedy The Game Plan kept scoring, sitting in seventh with $2.4 million for the weekend.

In eighth place, Wes Bentley’s career continued to spiral down into B-movie hell, with dodgy thriller P2 failing to find an audience and launching with just $2.2 million. And at ninth, 30 Days Of Night sank further, preparing to leave the charts with a current total of $37.3 million.

And so to the very bottom of the charts, where John Cusack’s adoption drama Martian Child lingers, having made a paltry $6 million in two weeks of release.
