Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix - updated hands-on

New playable characters, amazing backgrounds and the best fan remixes on the web

Capcom's on an old-school tear these days. Bionic Commando, 1942, Street Fighter IV, even Commando's getting a new lease on life. The latter is bound to see a huge boost in XBLA/PSN downloads thanks to its bundled beta of (deep breath) Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. Said beta, which still isn't available to gamers, only includes Ryu, Ken and few stages. Our latest go at the game, however, finally added Dee Jay and Akuma to the playable roster, as well as every background except T. Hawk.

What can we say? It's Street Fighter II with bafflingly beautiful artwork courtesy of amazo-artists Udon. Every frame of animation is intact and it all runs smooth as a clichéd analogy in summertime. The backgrounds are incredibly crisp too - we actually spent a good deal of time walking back and forth just to take in all the ultra-clean 1080p details (yes, that guy is still strangling a chicken on Chun-Li's stage). To put it simply, the game looks fantastic and the super-deep online component, with all manner of stat tracking and rankings, should keep old fans and newcomers entranced for a good long while.

In another nod to the fans, Capcom has sought out the mixmasters at OverClocked ReMix for a totally fan-made soundtrack. If you haven't had the pleasure of perusing OCR or the exhaustive Blood on the Asphalt album, downloading one quality mix after another, we suggest you head there now and do so - your nostalgia-loving soul will thank you.

If you'd like to sample some of the tunes you'll be caving heads to, check this page or check some of our favorites listed below.
