EA’s soccer series finally shoots its way to title success

Words: Dave Meikleham, GamesRadar UK

Over the last few years FIFA has been a bit like Man United’s tough-tackling, but workman-like, jobber Darren Fletcher. Solid, yet rarely thrilling, it’s been easy to look past EA’s faithful sim in favour of Pro Evolution Soccer’s sexier, arcade-fuelled football. But, just like the uncompromising midfielder, this year’s FIFA has come on leaps and bounds over the last 12 months.

Wayne Who-ney?

But, before we get into the meat and onion-bag blasters of the review, we thought we’d pause for a moment for any of you who think this is what football’s all about…

Regardless of whether you call the beautiful game soccer or not, or if you’ve never played a sports game, you should know FIFA 10 is still a huge deal. And that’s mainly because it features a new movement system that’s like going from this…

To this…

The bit for FIFA fanatics

For the rest of you, we preach to the converted, right? So it should come as no surprise that FIFA 10 introduces a 360° dribbling system (the first ever footie game to do so) that takes the series forward hugely.

We know what you think. It sounds like something a bunch of money men have cooked up just so they’ve got something to put on a shiny sticker for the box. But don’t worry. In practice, it’s as important as Fight Night introducing Total Punch Control or Skate’s ‘Flick It’ analogue system. EA going from gimmick-peddlers to innovators. Who’d have thunk it, eh?

Above: The new dribbling is the biggest evolutionary step we’ve seen in footie titles for a decade

So why is 360° dribbling such a massive deal, then? Well, in previous games you’ve always been restricted to players who can only move in 8 diagonal directions. At times, it felt like you were desperately shuffling little Subbuteo men about a Tron-style grid.

But now, nudge the stick in even the slightest direction and fleeted-footed players like Robinho move the ball in precise, subtle new directions. After years of players running on invisible rails, it’s liberating. The vibrant freedom of movement opens up spaces on the pitch you’ll never have exploited, and lets you squeeze into gaps between opposition players that simply haven’t existed before. It’s brilliantly organic and beautiful to watch in motion.

It's Tricky...Tr-tr-tr-tricky (Tricky) Trrrrrrrrrrricky

Don’t get us wrong. This doesn’t suddenly mean you’re going to skin an entire team like the pint-sized, but mesmerising Lionel Messi. Try to beat a man – especially on World Class difficulty or above – and you'll find it's still utterly nails. Get to grips with the skill moves on the right stick, though, and you can pull off some amazing mate-shaming moments in multi-player. Still, as you’ll see in the video below, it's hard to learn, and feels unintuitive at first.

This seems to be the only review to point out the flaws of the game. It was irritating on FIFA 09 to be fighting out for the title with West Ham and Newcastle, especially considering where Newcastle are now. I'll still get it, of course. I can barely remember being a PES man before, 09 was so good.

Excellent review.

true fighting newcastle and west ham was annoying as was teams like arsenal finishing mid table but i suppose newcastle were a decent team at the start of 09

If the league tables are so unrealistic, my club Ipswich might actually make it into the Premiership :P

i have been a pro evo fan ever since the second one, and it wasnt even fifa which swayed me to stop buying pro evo every year, It was how utterly bad pro evo 2008 was, it just felt like such a step backwards i think i must have spent about 20 minutes playing master league and i just thought "what the hell is this s**t"! and the very same day i bought fifa and have never looked back. No more spending hours changing team names, player names, kits etc. And from the looks of this review the gameplay may have finally surpassed pro evo!

Am I ever sick about reading of people changing to FIFA after playing PES for so long... YAWN. You people enjoy your glorified advert, while I'll enjoy my GAME. Sure, I'll admit that FIFA has definately upped it's game in recent years. You do realised how it's done that don't you? ITS DIRECTLY COPIED PRO EVO's GAMEPLAY. There's even an option to change to PES's control system! lol. Nice try Peter Moore, nice try. My money will be lining Seabass' pockets, and all ways has.
FIFA is for hoes, PES is for pros!!

Whether FIFA is indeed the game of choice for gardening implements or not, everyone is of course intitled to their own opinion, whether well reasoned or not. Critical consensus seems to suggest that FIFA is now the more realistic in playstyle and better for that.

I have a question, Dave M.
have they sorted out the bugs where players suspended or injured would not make it back into the team during BAP mode?
How about the relegation and promotion of teams as a result of game modes?
or players suddenly being renamed numbers and, therefore, becoming inelligble to play?
i expereinced all these in '09.... but it's still no where near as glitchy as PES, and at least it doesn't cheat.
er, Tomsta666 (lol), what exactly has FIFA copied from PES? PES doesn't have 360 deg. dribble, it doesnt have a trick stick, they both introduced BAP at the same time (even though, technically, you could always do it on PES but with no reward/longevity). As for the control system. the only difference is re-pathing a few buttons (lob becomes shoot and vice-versa) no fucking way. change the controls? like, that's never been done before. you douche. I was a fan of PES ever since ISS:Deluxe on SNES but since PES'07 i got sick and tired of crappy sprites, buggy gameplay and no licenses. evidently, unlike yourself, i've been unbiased when approaching these games. you may want to try removing your head from your arse if you're to ever experience the best annual iteration of the beautiful game. FIFA is far superior in evey way. PES will have to find themselves an Arabian billionaire to get them back on top....and we all know that's never going to happen.

OK I may have to eat my words.

Obviously Im a PES fanboy and I was trolling with my first comment, but having played the FIFA 10 demo a couple of times, I've got to say... Im impressed. I think it might even warrant a purchase :S

actually konami added 360 dribble into pes a month or 2 ago

Looks like konami are going to have to start copying EA.

The PES10 Demo didnt include 360 dribble and it did not feel any different to PES8 and 9, both of which I have.

If they wanted people to buy PES they should have not put the demo up for people to compare.

On the basis of the demos I have to say FIFA10 plays a better game of footy.

I am also amazed it has taken football games so long to use the analog sticks! Mario could walk in 360 directions in Mario 64.. Next year the tilt will control the speed of your player...

FIFA this year, who knows Konami might do something other than change the menu screen and photo shop last year PES next year..

as great as the review is you forget to mention that in order to use GAMEFACE you need a pc unlike the built in gameface on fight night round 4 and from what ive been told u also need money to get virtual pro running. dont get me wrong i love fifa the only other football game i owned and liked was adidas power soccer and that was the PS1 era . i hope they somehow put the gameface software onto psn so people who cant afford a pc get to use its features. i haven't got my copy of fifa10 yet but if im incredibly wrong of what i said dont flame me for it. i do hope im wrong and virtual pro is free because it looks like a trophy earning mode.

I have been so on the fence about whether to buy this or not.
I've always been a Fifa fan, I did enjoy the old PES games ala SNES though.
This review has made me think if I like my football games, I NEED this...
So, Im gonna risk it.

Avoid this game like the plague, it is cack!!
It's like playing footie in one half of the pitch. got this game last night & i'll be returning it this afternoon. Trying to sidestep an opponent is like three point turning an articulated truck. To top it all, playing on a white pitch with a white ball is a unique experience to say the least!
Don't believe the hype. PES forever!!
