Call of Juarez - hands-on

Wild weapons of fire and brimstone Western shooter revealed

Stage coach chases, bar brawls, and train robberies. Almost no clichéd Western scenario is off limits in Call of Juarez. From themes of revenge and justice to gameplay and graphics, Call of Juarez pays homage to everything a Western-lover could want. The game’s a mixture of both old school spaghetti western films with bright sunny backdrops, and today’s darker films filled with grit, dirt, and blood. It’s part Clint Eastwood, part John Wayne, part Unforgiven, and part Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid all in one.

We stepped into the shoes of Reverend Ray, a former gun slinger turned preacher man during our time with an early build of the game. The good Reverend is under the impression that his brother was brutally murdered by his nephew Billy. He wants to turn in the good book for a pair of pistols to strike down Billy with “great vengeance and furious anger” Samuel Jackson style. The only problem is that Billy was framed. As you play through the game, you’ll switch between the Reverend as he hunts down his brother’s son, and Billy who’s out to prove his innocence while escaping his uncle’s fire and brimstone brand of justice.
