Square Enix reveals next gen tech demo

This could be what the next Final Fantasy will look like

“It’s all in real-time.” That was the phrase that was repeated throughout the presentation as Square Enix unveiled the Luminous Studio engine that is being developed internally. To show off the engine’s capabilities, Square Enix showed a demo called, “Agni’s Philosophy” which you can watch below.

Looks nice, right? No mention of another Final Fantasy at E3, but we do know that Kingdom Hearts III should be on its way now that Kingdom Hearts 3D Dream Drop Distance is out.

Now if they could only develop gameplay that matches the technology on display that'd be great. Square have gone backwards in terms of actually gameplay compared to not only western RPGs but JRPGs as well.

Square enix proves once again that they are the greatest creators of virtual hair in all the world. Also Square Enix should definitely make this into an actual game.

I really don't get the hate for SE Ok, FFXIII wasn't to everyone's tastes due to the linear-style, but there was a lot of right to it - the story was great, the battle system was original and well implemented, and there was a decent amount of replay value in it due to all the monster quests and gran pulse post-boss. FFXIII-2 was hands-down excellent. Take all the good things about the original, add world exploration and increase replay value with multiple endings, and add even more depth to the combat. You only have to look at the fact that Famitsu gave it 40/40 which is a rare honour indeed. It's not backwards compared to Western RPGs - It's a different style of game. If they abandoned it in favour of western-style RPGs all that would happen is we would lose diversity in the games available to us. And they haven't gone backwards in terms of JRPGs either - what they are producing is definitively JRPG (story-driven quests and turn-based combat mechanics). All the things that are being done by other companies such as live combat and true open world mechanics are moves towards adopting western-RPG styling.

that's a reply to CUFCfan616 and ncurry2 btw - was posted as a reply but appeared as mainpost.... oh, and on topic - the tech demo is exceptional! Just to think that it's real-time rendering is mind-blowing, and I can't wait to see what they do with the engine in earnest

I agree with you entirely about final fantasy XIII and XIII-2, however I do believe that those two nincompoops are judging Square Enix on a couple of titles and not their entire library, as a third party publisher Square Enix is one of the best in my opinion, especially their eidos properties. recaptcha: sons ign'sfun

the graphics are absolutely fantastic! I think if the resolution was 4000x by whatever it would be better because the jagged edges are the only thing that detracted from that viewing experience. Of course you wouldn't be able to see 4000 resolution on a regular laptop screen like mine anyway but you know what i'm getting at. If Gran Turismo is not photorealistic in the next generation I think I'll be surprised!

I had an awfully hard time just trying to work out what was going on through half of that trailer. But, I think the most important thing to take from that article was that stuff about Kingdom Hearts 3.

Nice. The crazy dude's face was beautifully animated. Everything looked great, especially that sci-fi city at the end. The world looked weird and jumbled, but that's just Square Enix being themselves. I'd love a game set there, though. Also, did anyone else think the girl looked a little like Morrigan from Dragon Age, just with a bit less hate?

I think she may have been using it to make a makeshift potion to heal her gunshot wounds.
