There’s a Sleeping Dogs movie coming – and the lead is Star Wars: Rogue One’s Donnie Yen (wait, what?)

Now for your daily dose of ‘Huh? That’s actually a thing?’ news: Star Wars: Rogue One’s Donnie Yen will be starring in a movie version of Sleeping Dogs. It’s not exactly top of the list of video game movie adaptations everyone wanted but, hey, with Donnie Yen’s acting chops (pun definitely intended) and martial arts background it might actually be good. Maybe?

Deadline is reporting that Yen will play an “undercover police officer on a mission to take down one of the most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations in the world: the notorious Triads.” There are no pork buns in sight, but the movie is being produced by Fast and Furious producer Neal Moritz. Expect plenty of ridiculous car chases.

The 2012 Square Enix release, which was re-released on current-gen consoles in 2014, treads much the same path as the synopsis, and it’ll be interesting to see Yen get more kudos in the West having already been a household name in his native China for several years.

Will it join the ranks of passable video game movies or should we let Sleeping Dogs lie?
