Race Driver: Create & Race review

  • Track creator expands gameplay
  • Multiplayer is a blast
  • Friends wiping out on corners
  • Visuals are so-so for DS
  • Dumbed down controls
  • Redundant career mode

Sept 28, 2007

Let's be brutally honest. Race Driver: Create & Race isn't the best looking of the Race Driver franchise. That's not to say it isn't a phenomenal effort for the DS - it kind of looks likes other formats, but only if you squinted and looked at the screen with your head inside your t-shirt. Plus, the handling has been simplified to the point where driving a Renault Clio and STRANA Supertrack feels much the same. It makes what was a simulator with arcade leanings a totally arcade experience.

But put this to the back of your mind and you'll find something that makes Create & Race fantastic - the track creator. Unique to the DS and ideal for its capabilities, you can make some devilish and sprawling circuits that you can then challenge three mates to race you against via Wi-Fi or head-to-head with card sharing.

The appeal of the easy-to-use circuit editor and the potential within essentially makes the career mode (and what was supposedly the core of the game) redundant. After all, why bother with a slightly blotchy rendition of Silverstone when you can build a hellish nightmare of a circuit filled with chicanes, hairpins and swooping straights, which you can then race your mates on?

Playing to the strengths of the DS has rescued Race Driver: Create & Race from a fate worse than blandness.
