Fark.comOh, OK, so Pro Evolution Soccer on PSP has suffered slowdown in every one of its incarnations, but after the framerate debacle on PS3 we’re that bit more sensitive to the jerkiness. We’d been hoping that this would be the year that handheld PES would be lag-free, but no - every so often, predominantly on scrambles in the box following corners, the game lurches all over the place. It’s no worse than previous years, and you can sometimes go consecutive matches without noticing any problems, but it’s there. And if you’ve played as much PES on PS3 as we have, it becomes even more depressing than before.
Still, it plays as excellently as ever, although it’s basically a straight conversion of the PS2 version of PES 2008. And so, just like this year’s PS2 version was almost identical to last year’s PS2 version, the on-pitch action in Pro Evo 2008 on PSP is near-enough the same as the handheld version of Pro Evo 6. Which means it’s a terrific game, but one that suffers from over-familiarity. But there are two big new features in this year’s PSP PES.
The first, and best, new addition is that you can now play Master League at home on your PS2, then transfer the data via USB to PSP and carry on playing on the bus. Then you can transfer the updated info back to your PS2. While last year you could swap updated player data and the like onto PSP, this takes it all on a step further. It means Master League could literally take over every spare minute you have. There’s no way of transferring PS3 Master League data to PSP, mind you.
