New Max Payne 3 screenshots feature Payne before and after hair

I love Max Payne (platonically), but I'm still not sure I love his new, old bald dude persona. Today, Rockstar released a new batch of screens from EDGE's cover story, and while bald Payne makes several appearances, so does a much more Payne-like Payne. Perhaps the game includes flashbacks, or just a significant amount of time progression. Or maybe bald Payne is his long-lost brother (one can hope). I should probably just read the EDGE feature, but until then, screenshots.

A selection of the most notable screens is below, and you can see the whole set, all big and stuff, in our screenshot viewer.

I miss constipated Max, personally.

I have to say that Max Payne has never "done it" for me. hoo-ray (in Shane Patterson's monotone voice)

@Tariqwahab; man i wish i was playing max payne for the first time all over again. awesome games. get to playing. hope R* keep pain pills in the game, wish developers would stop wrapping us in cotton wool with regenerating health in cover bollocks. I blame Sony and the atrocious Getaway.

I don't see the problem with the lack of hair. You play as him in the Max payne 2 era, he lets himself go a bit and grows a beard, then something bad happens (let's face it, it's Max Payne), he moves to Brazil, grows a 'ZZ Topp' and shaves his head to disguise himself...

Is it really necessary that Max payne must now feature cover shooting? Really, what is the point. Cover shooting is a gameplay limiting device that should never have become anywhere near as popular as it is. What does it add to gameplay, besides sapping your freedom which is part of what gaming is all about? Can anyone honestly answer?

Must say, it looks like a 360 launch game.

I kind of preferred the first. The story was much more driven rather than a convoluted sequence of events, the shotguns felt stronger, and Max actually had a personality. But after 3 years of brooding and some detective work, he apparently gained super speed (at the cost of any sarcastic wit he had left), which I'm not a fan of being forced to use for the difficult fights.

I can't wait! Hopefully, like the new Alice game, we'll get a retro throwback for buying the game. The original was under 1GB, so it shouldn't be too hard.

I agree with BurntToShreds. I too like the idea of Payne losing it. Man can't catch a break. I hope the game doesn't become a regenerating health cover shooter. I hate those types of games (including the Gears Of War saga). The only ones I had time for was the Kane & Lynch games. But that's just for the writing. The gameplay is atrocious.

I actually think that the old and bald Max Payne seemed like a decent idea. I mean, he quit his job and let himself go, and he had to deal with his family getting killed. I think it would have been hilariously awesome seeing a fat and balding man as the main protagonist.

@Tariqwahab YES! You must play them! IF you can get them on the PC as the console ports were alright but they lagged, had terrible graphics and lots of loading times. Both were great games, something unseen in this day and age of gaming, it had amazing unique gameplay, a strong narrative and great characters, the 2nd is the best. YOU MUST PLAY THEM!

Not sure what you are getting at with the Ace Ventura reference other than his shirt maybe? But this is constipated max http://images.wikia.com/maxpayne/images/0/0f/Max_payne3_rumor.jpg lol
  • ProfessorBonk - April 23, 2011 7 a.m.

By 'constipated' Max, I can assume you mean the Ace Ventura we played as in the first game.
  • Tariqwahab - April 23, 2011 5:44 a.m.

I just need to know that if i have to play the first 2 parts to play this one?? i mean of course the story is related , but should i play them?? cuz just reading the name ROCKSTAR on the game makes it a must buy.

Any Max Payne is good Max Payne. (except if it involves mark walberg)
  • Yaro - April 23, 2011 1:41 a.m.

I miss Max Payne very much. I played 1 and 2 so much...I will like this. Bald or hair.
  • NathanXplosion - April 23, 2011 1:32 a.m.

Max Payne is so badass that cover hides behind him.
