Last of Us video takes a bad detour

New footage of PS3-exclusive shows the danger of the open road

The world of The Last of Us seems pretty different from Naughty Dog's previous adventurous creations, as gorgeous vistas and globe-trotting has been replaced by a society ruined by a world-ending plague. Survivors are few and far between and there seems to be little reason to hold out hope, what with the flesh-eating monsters out to devour you at every turn. But as this new trailer proves, you should be just as concerned about running into uninfected humans.

In a scene that reminds us of the amazing sci-fi film Children of Men, we're used to helping people in need when we find them in games, but in Last of Us that's proven fairly naive as the grizzled Joel quickly teaches young Ellie. We're curious how the rest of this scene plays out and just when the gameplay starts. Actually, we're fairly curious how the actual game plays in general, as Sony has yet to show any of that publically. We're betting Sony's June 4 E3 press conference will finally give us a glimpse of what players will experience in the PS3-exclusive.

Well, given what little info I was able to find on the game I have to say I'm still on the fence about it at the moment. I notice that there's a lot of talk about the game trying to raise the bar for story telling within the industry. But I remember the last game to make that claim was heavy rain, and that didn't turn out as well as everybody would have liked. Still, Naughty dog has a good track record for this kind of thing, so I'm not entirely against it yet. I do get the feeling that if it fails to live up to expectations, it's going to fail in a big way.

*Wants to avoid contact with other survivors.* *Drives round town with the car stereo on* But seriously, looks great.

I'm calling it right now. You play as Joel for just about the entire game. Then at the end you (Joel) become infected yourself, and you switch to control of Ellie, and Joel is the final boss of the game.

Not a bad theory. I'd like to think they can be less predictable than that though.

    Love the song!

The visuals and voice acting was impressive. Hopefully the entire game is that visually stunting and the voice acting stays that good.

Okay, thank God! When I saw the title of the article on the front page, I thought it meant the game was running into problems or something! It would be an awful shame for anything unfortunate to happen to this game, it looks really good, but hopefully these trailers aren't as misleading as Dead Island's O.o

It kind of surprises me that you guys didn't point out that Ellie has been redesigned. Mainly so that she no longer looks like Ellen Page's clone. Anyway, this was an impressive piece of cinematic. Looking forward to see how this would translate into actual game-play. Here's hoping they actually make judging whether you should risk helping someone out or not an actual decision with consequences, and not just a scripted set-piece.

She still looks like an Ellen Page clone to me. Plus, her name is "Ellie." It's gotta be intentional.

Maybe so, I do like the re-design though. She might still look similar, but she also now feels a bit more unique to me.

This looks to be the intro of the section described in Game Informer. I primarily play the 360, so this looks to be a great reason to dust off the PS3.

"amazing sci-fi film Children of Men" ha, amazingly shit more like.

I think you are getting confused with the movie "Children from Men". And if you didn't like it I suggest you watch less gay porn and try good old fashioned straight porno. It just might turn you from cynical asshole to annoying poster.

Hank Williams Sr. in the background is just icing on the cake... Can't wait to see some gameplay
