If you're a regular listener of the TalkRadar UK podcast then you'll know that I'm basically in love with Deadly Premonition. There are many interpretations of its off-kilter survival-mystery-horror wonders. Some say it's awful. Some say it's so bad it's good. Some say it's a flawed masterpiece. Others say it's simply a masterpiece, and a work of utter misunderstood genius. All but the last of those groups are wrong. And this clip of Agent York interrogating the mother of a murdered girl is just one of a hundred reasons why.

I LOVED this game, until I got stuck with a boss battle that, because of the archaic control scheme, I simply didn't have the patience to pass. Maybe later, when I'm more Zen...

I'm also in the "Deadly Premonitions is a masterpiece" camp. Most games tout their stories as the end-all, be-all for itself but DP made no proclamations about this fact and actually DID end up being a phenomenally well-written game. Without giving away ANY spoilers, the game twists and turns in such ways that makes any proceeding play-through's far more thought-provoking than they should be. Seriously, there's a massive spoiler in the first friggin' game area and unless you've beaten the game, you will not see it! The character is weird for a reason, again without giving anything away, and once you beat the game, it'll make sense why he rambles like he does and why has a very floaty personality. The supporting characters all have a depth to them that makes them all on some level relate-able because it makes anything bad that happens in the game, again without giving out any spoilers, pack more of a punch than it would in other games. True the game is "quirky" (re: bad) and some of the games concepts are not as fully fleshed out as they could be but this IS one of those games you hear about that is worth soldiering through just for the highly-original story and actual characters who have, well, CHARACTER to them. It's also only $20 new so it's not like you'll be taking much of a hit financially by playing it.

This does look very reminiscent of a Dreamcast-era game. Blue Stinger is another so bad, it's good game that I enjoyed and still own.

I actually started playing Deadly Premonition about two days ago, and everything about it reminds me of the Sega Dreamcast for some reason. From the weird control system that seems to have been designed to only take one analogue stick into account to the bombastic music and utterly weird voice acting, it just seems like a throwback to the days of Shenmue and House of the Dead. Also, it has the best pause screen of any game, ever.

Deadly Premonition is the perfect time capsule of what games used to be mixed in with a fantastic story and loveable characters. I really like the voice work, the conversations York has with him self are hilarious! It is actually my favorite game of all time, Links Awakening and Ocarina of Time are below it.
