FortressCraft site hit with DDOS attack on Minecraft 360 launch day

Adam Sawkins, creator of the number one selling Xbox Live Indie Game of all-time, FortressCraft, had some choice words for Minecraft-creator and internet-celebrity Markus Persson and his online followers today after revelations that FortressCraft's website had been the subject of a DDOS attack.

"F**k you and your 'community', @Notch," Sawkins tweeted in the wake of the attack.

Sawkins has repeatedly been the focus of ire in the Minecraft community due to allegations that he cloned the Minecraft concept for FortressCraft (which subsequently made him quite wealthy.)

Sawkins has denied those claims, saying that FortressCraft borrows nothing more from Minecraft than Minecraft borrow from its own predecessors.

"We know *who* it was, but sadly we didn't get a note in the post saying WHY," Sawkins said to Eurogamer after the attack. "We've sailed over our cap for the month so far, and are going through the process of talking to the police about it.

"Under British law, yes [the police can act on the attack]. Hacking is a fairly serious crime over here, and it's not a personal site, it's a business site. Loss of earnings, all that crap. I personally wouldn't have bothered, but the guy who does my website is FLAMING over it!"

Yes, how very mature of everyone involved.
  • ShadowReaper666 - May 10, 2012 2:24 p.m.

Indeed. To start of with yes the website shouldn't have been hacked however there was no need for him to act like a prick. He didn't need to insult the whole minecraft community and its creators. But lets be honest now fortress craft is a bit of a blatant minecraft clone. It seems he is on a crusade against minecraft.

While I agree Sawkins acting like a prick was an immature move, I can't help but feel I would be just as pissed, if not more, if I was in the same situation. That doesn't justify the childish act, no, but I can understand why he acted like a dick. And yeah, there is no denying fortress craft is a minecraft clone.

I don't care that FortressCraft borrows elements from Minecraft because Minecraft itself borrowed from other games, Notch has admitted it. Sadly there are douchebag fans of anything. But really, does this guy have to insult the ENTIRE MC community for what a few idiots did? But now I'm curious to see the damage these hackers did... Hell, he's probably going to get even less sales now.
  • gopikmin - May 10, 2012 4:51 p.m.

The problem is that fortresscraft looks so much like minecraft and plays much like it too. If it wasn't so similar then, the hate would be much less. basically it seems that Sawkins just took advantage of the fact that xbox didn't have minecraft and made a minecraft clone to gain those profits from xbox only players
  • essiy - May 10, 2012 6:58 p.m.

Yes, I recognize that, and that is the main reason I own Minecraft on my PC and why FortressCraft isn't going to find it's way onto my Xbox. That said, Minecraft itself borrows from other games, like I said, The difference is that Notch made the idea his own by changing things and building on the original idea. Sawkins isn't like Notch, the difference between them is that Notch openly admits the game's roots, where as Sawkins acts completely butthurt whenever Minecraft is brought up. He has no reason to insult the MC community or the people that make the game, that's where Sawkins is in the wrong. I highly doubt that Notch had anything to do with it, no, I wouldn't believe it. It was a bunch of people who decided to take this into their own hands. That said, Sure, Sawkins should be upset, but he's getting upset with the wrong people. If this were about any other game with a similar idea as Minecraft *Cough* Terraria *Cough*, I'd even feel inclined to stand up for the game and it's creator/creators. I play Terraria as well. What I have a problem with is not the origins of the game, I have a problem with Adam Sawkins taking this little "Attack" and insulting everyone who has something to do with the game he so heavily borrows from.

And then probably blame Minecraft players for said losses even more.
  • onetimebuster - May 10, 2012 2:55 p.m.

Was FortressCraft the one with chapter 1 in the title?
  • therawski - May 10, 2012 3:25 p.m.

I play a lot of MineCraft and I've never heard of FortressCraft so f**k you Adam Sawkins, very professional of you to over generalize all gamers as hackers.
  • Rub3z - May 10, 2012 5:07 p.m.

    Two words: OH SNAAAAAP!!!!!! :P
  • Net_Bastard - May 10, 2012 5:07 p.m.

I would not put it past the Minecraft fanbase to do this. These are the same people who sent death threats to the creator of Manic Digger (another Minecraft clone). Sawkins was completely in the right here.

As I said in my original comment, there are nut-jobs everywhere. I would agree that he has a good reason to be pissed, but the reason this is news is because he's just flat out accusing and insulting people. That's what he's doing wrong. He had a knee-jerk reaction and he handled it very, very poorly. As a writer myself I've received similar accusations of "Copying" back in my early days, so I know how it feels. Looking back, I was an un-original little shit at one point. So I have no problems with Sawkins getting angry, but like I said, it's how he handled it. I wouldn't be surprised if he received another attack because of this reaction.
  • Voodoowolfe - May 10, 2012 5:07 p.m.

Good for you Adam Sawkins. Not taking this lying down and just putting it out there that Notch and everyone who plays MC is out to get you. Way to prove you are the better dev and lower yourself to 'their' level. I mean you made your 'original' game that has so little to do with MC. I mean it looks nothing like or functions nothing like MC. Good for you and I hope you get 'em. Oh and btw, Fuck you too Adam Sawkins. You talentless C**T.
  • talleyXIV - May 10, 2012 6:14 p.m.

Using the "F" word probably was a little much but reacting to an attack that could lose him thousands and even hundreds of thousands of dollars really is not ridiculous. That being said, he should really admit that he stole most of his game from Minecraft because their looks are uncanny and they came out just a couple years apart.
  • Scuffles - May 10, 2012 8:59 p.m.

Firstly I am surprised to find out that Fortress craft has a website. Then I was thoroughly disappointed that some asshats would DDOS it even tho it is arguably a MC ripoff...... Then I kept reading the article and saw the response that the guy gave over twitter and all my sympathy evaporated. Don't get me wrong the asshats that DDOSed the guys site are still asshats.... but wow what an asshat response.
  • Manguy17 - May 10, 2012 11:56 p.m.

seeing as damn near all the money he earned from fortress craft was off the back of minecraft's success, id say he deserves to lose something.
  • laurenhiya21 - May 11, 2012 1:11 a.m.

Ok, I admit I felt a little sorry for the guy (despite not liking FortressCraft in the slightest), but after I read the part about him swearing at Notch... all sympathy lost Yeah, they don't know yet who was responsible, but (if I remember correctly, sorry if I'm wrong) Notch had no problem with FortressCraft, so I doubt he was at all responsible So there really was no reason for that sort of behavior :/ Either way, he didn't seem to great from the start... It's extremely obvious that he.. um.. "gained inspiration" from Minecraft, yet in not admitting that, he really seemed like a jerk (well, to me at least)
  • PevMaster - May 11, 2012 6:32 a.m.

This man is an asshole. First, he robs the concept of Minecraft, then he sells it for thousands of dollars and now he's blamed this hack on the Minecraft community and directly sworn at Notch! F*ck this guy. I'm glad that he was hacked, and whoever did it should receive a pat on the back, especially if they were a fellow Minecrafter. ;)
  • ChaosEternal - May 11, 2012 1:33 p.m.

Actually, he thought of the concept, and started making it a reality BEFORE Notch ever thought of Minecraft. However, they ran into some problems and had to stop making the game to become better at coding. During that time Minecraft was first created, and eventually they were able to learn enough to continue. However, since Minecraft was out and already quite popular, it looked like they had blatantly ripped it off. At least, that is what I had read a while back. The information could be wrong or outdated, so you may wish to check. ^.^ (Also, it could certainly be some misinformed, angry Minecrafter. If they weren't lying, then they apparently do know whether or not it was.)
  • PevMaster - May 15, 2012 1:49 p.m.

No, that's not true. FortressCraft began development in about August 2010, a year or so after Minecraft came out.
