Final Fantasy XIII

Team Lightning comes correct with a breakneck, all-out fight for survival

Words: Carolyn Gudmundson on March 4, 2010

It's hard to talk about Final Fantasy XIII without getting into a debate about what an RPG should or shouldn't be. With a series as beloved and long-running as Final Fantasy, combined with its history of reinventing itself (or at the very least, changing things up) with every major entry, it's understandable that a lot of nervous hopes ride on the first FF of the current gen. We all have our favorite game in the series (which we'd practically go to the death defending), so it makes sense that fan expectations for FFXIII vary widely too.

So it follows then, that since the Japanese release, fan reaction to certain aspects of FFXIII has been mixed. If you're reading this, you've probably already skimmed through many a kneejerk reaction forum post of rage that made you anxious to see the reality of the final product for yourself. So let's get right to it.

Yes, the first 25 hours of the game are totally linear

This is the main point that causing some otherwise sane people to lose their freaking gourds.

At the very beginning (the first few hours), we're talking 2D side-scroller levels of linearity. Walk forward, fight some dudes. Walk forward a few more steps and fight some more dudes. The path might curve a bit from time to time and have little offshoots that contain treasure chests, but that's the extent of it.

But listen, it's awesome – really! There's no need to fall into a pit of despair and fanboy rage just yet (unless you're an utterly unreasonable person, then by all means go ahead).

The Final Fantasy series has never truly given the player freedom in a role-playing sense, and every major plot point in each Final Fantasy story (FFXI excepted, obviously) has been 100% fixed. FFXIII simply takes it a step further, streamlining the formula into a more controlled, more focused experience (and in the end it's not wildly different than the structure of Final Fantasy X).

The upside to this structure is that the pacing is fantastic – from the first moments of the opening sequence, you really feel swept up in the story and action in a way that's completely unprecedented in a JRPG. There's no lengthy, tedious, expository opening cutscene where you watch the characters from afar and wait for the actual game to start. Instead, you're right there with Lightning and Sazh in the thick of the action as they throw themselves desperately into an us-against-world fight to survive.

The downside is that any pretense of freedom (i.e. the ability to diddle around exchanging pleasantries with NPCs and walking into strangers' houses) is completely gone. But considering that our protagonists are outlaws fighting for their lives against an all-powerful corrupt government, it makes perfect sense that they'd make a beeline for safety rather than leisurely exploring.

And other thing – FFXIII's controlled structure makes it such that no suspension of disbelief is needed for the sake of the gameplay. As in, absolutely everything you do makes sense in the context of the story. It makes sense that the first half of the game would be fairly linear – after all, you're inside a relatively tiny, hollowed-out moon-like satellite called Cocoon, which like its name suggests, fairly cozily houses its inhabitants. Wide-open spaces simply wouldn't fit.

Above: Cocoon hangs low in the sky, almost always visible on Pulse (also check out that huge Adamantoise)

Furthermore, Cocoon's cramped interior makes it all the more impactful when you do venture down to Gran Pulse, the lush green planet below. Where Cocoon was claustrophobic and linear, Pulse's Archylte Steppe is wide open, with more than enough area to explore.

Above: Don't worry, Chocobos are plentiful

So where are the towns?!

It's not so much that FFXIII doesn't have towns, but rather it doesn't have the usual JRPG structure of town-dungeon-town-dungeon-boss repeat. Oh, there are towns in FFXIII, the beautiful beach town of Bodhum and the abandoned, overgrown Oerba for example, but they're not RPG towns as such.

Not entirely dissimilar to real life, RPG towns have a threefold purpose: to provide respite from the dangerous outer world, to hide the NPC that will help progress your quest, and to provide various retail establishments for your shopping needs. The first two functions are made obsolete by the structure of the game.

Above: There are no random encounters, so you can avoid enemies whenever you'd like to avoid battle fatigue

FFXIII takes care of the last necessity by providing a wide selection of virtual shops available at every save point (which are mercifully plentiful, by the way). Virtual shops were a welcome change in Crisis Core, and again in FFXIII provide a streamlined, functional, time-saving solution.

And it's not like the shops are bland despite being reduced to menus – far from it. The shop menus (like all of FFXIII's menus) are lovely. Each shop has its own sounds, logos, and even punchy, consumerism-celebratory flavor text to describe each retailer ("At Unicorn Mart, your health is our business. Our expert pharmacists are standing by, day and night, to send you whatever you need, wherever you need it…")

Still miss those towns?

I went on the review section to find a game or two to rent/buy so I sorted them by review score high to low. In my opinion Gamesradar has given a 10 rating to way too many games that the rating of 10 has lost its worth on this site. Furthermore a chunk of the games given 10's aren't even worth 8 or 9 !
I don't like the use of the word "streamlined" because anybody with a brain knows that when someone says something is streamlined it means really they've cut something out of it.

    Anyway that's all.

I just beat the game today. This is why I love Square Enix! The graphics are the best of any game that currently exists, the game is fun to play and watch, there's tons of content (I had 50 hours of GP and didn't finish all the side stuff), the story is straight forward, there's a lot of strategy involved, the environments are breathtaking, and I could go on and on. This is my first FF game and really sets the bar for all the other games.
    TL;DR...THIS GAME F***ING RULES!!!

It's an odd one this - it does so many things wrong in my eyes, but I'm still enjoying it in the main. I didn't come with any preconceptions as I'd never played an FF game before, so quite a lot of the tropes of the series were fresh to me. Gorgeous graphics, great battles (I find the bosses can spike horribly unfairly in difficulty at times, although that just makes it more satisfying when you finally bring them down) and a decent story are it's strong points, but it's also got some hideously negative aspects. It's linearity is overly restrictive, and when it finally opens out it actually isn't necessary (I'm on Pulse at the moment, and bored of the grind). There are also times when you will watch a cutscene, walk forward a few steps, watch another one, repeat... it begins to take the piss a bit. Aforementioned difficulty spikes, a slightly confusing weapons levelling system and a lack of interesting characters - Sazh and Lightning are the only two I can sort of stand, and Lightning only because she spends the first few hours repeatedly punching Snow in the face - means that the story doesn't pack quite the wallop it should. It's not a 10/10 in my eyes because of this - there are just too many problems. Still deserves a decent score though, more like a 7 or 8.

finally a review not whining about the linearity. too many people were expecting a wide open generic style rpg, and when square enix threw them a linear curveball, they broke down and started cryin like a bunch of babies. this game is great at being what it is, a story driven rpg with one of the best battle systems ive seen since chrono trigger and a linear path that keeps the story moving at a break-neck speed. If you arent going in expecting an oblivion-esque sandbox, than you should love this game

    Compared to other Final Fantas"ies":

-My story may not that "OMFG, Aerith dies!" but that's ok, I am just an epic cutscenes skipper.

-My gameplay is just walking, and only focusing on some strategies of sort when bosses show off, but that's ok, just drool on these cool graphics (but kick that time-eater boss' ass, heh).

Oh yeah, Restart is godly and Death spell is evil, lol.

-My level grinding is, meh, quite rare and not really motivating, where is my freedom like FFX's Sphere Grid (not LOCKED by story events) and my freedom to roam even in aeras with monsters which can literally nuke you on sight? Well, you actually have to correctly search your own troubles to come.

Still playing FF XIII by day and FF IV DS by night, the changes are not killing, though, the former is a must-have (or must-see) for motivated fans of the genre. I am enjoying FF XIII, guys!

"A JRPG plot with no melodramatic scenes, no navel gazing exposition", your jocking right. The story is riddled with needless exposition and melodramatic scenes. There is far to many unnecessary cutscenes in the game especially regarding the hopeless hope. We were shown in an early cutscene what happened to his mother, do we really need to be reminded of it again and again with flasback after flashback. Do you really think that the scene where his feud with snow reached it's climax wasn't overly melodramatic.

There is no reason why any game should have that many cutscenes, it's not what gaming should be about and you lot know it considering you wrote the brilliant article on why games fail at story telling some time ago. The game doesn't even give the player much inpur in the battles at all either by only letting you control one character. And the summons might as well not be in the game there so unbelievably useless.

I don't see how you can give this game a 10. Only a select few games should ever get a 10. Resident evil 4 is one and possibly half life 2 being another. They were truly phenomenal games for their time and brought a whole new dimension to gaming as well as being tremendous fun to play. FF 13 is not on their level. The game gets a 7 from me.

i bought this game yesterday and was AMAZED at the game. i was playing for hours and lost track of time and was awe inspired by the graphics and streamlined and perfect gameplay. The battle sequences are polished to perfection and every move that is made in the game contributes to the story. This ame is brilliant and one of my favourites of the series and of all of my games that ive ever played.

I agree with everything said in this review, and found it the most accurate on the web about FFXIII. Is not simple to understand why this game was slammed by all the US reviewers, putting a big cloud over it while most of the gamers are really enjoying it.

The weakest point, the linear aspect, falls apart when square enix comes from FFXII, a game not linear at all, and is going to FFXIV, an mmo. They are trying something different, and I think the reviewers got caught by surprise, with their " it is the same old mechanincs, no innovation " already written. most RPG nowadays are introducing some sandbox aspects, but most of them are still linear, and they gave you some fake freedom.

I have play all FF and a ton of other RPGs, and I must say this is not an extrict RPG,it is an action story driven RPG game and thats the main problem. FF fans, and RPG fans are too straightforward, they dont want new.

The music is pure perfection, but is not uematsu, so the reviewers found nothing there. the story is powerfull, but the reviewers dont want falcie, they want origami killer. the graphics are the best in a game ever, and the desing is pure art, so the reviewers, sitted in their chairs, gave them an 8/10. I think that is pathetic.

If you want raw exploration, dont buy this game, there a ton other option out there, but if you enjoy and engaging story, perfect music and graphics and one of the best battle systems in an RPG, you are going to LOVE this game.

I agree with a lot of the points in the review, but I think it is worth pointing out that its not just the first part of the game that is linear. It is the last part as well.

In fact, only Chapter 11, out of 13, allows free roaming. I would argue that the game would have been better if Chapter 11 would have been linear as well, since it slows down dramatically at that point without any real reason to do so, other than to satisfy critics.

Of course, by calling it a Final Fantasy game, there are certain expectations. They bucked many of the expectations, but maybe Chapter 11 was a bone thrown to JRPG fans. I think they should have stuck to their guns and just kept the pace up from start to finish.

Who knows, without devoting all the resources to Chapter 11, maybe this game could've been out last year?

    25 hours!

well I got bored of the cut scenes "start & back" to skip them and it took me 8 hours to get to the kinda open world.

I miss the older final fantasy games better. SNES ones were definitely awesome.

This game is kinda like watching a movie.

its a good game, i played it 11 hours straight till i won it. but it only deserves an 8/10 rating in my opinion.

Maybe squaresoft could bring back "Breath of Fire" and keep all the cool things like: open world / towns / control all characters in battle / exp. (lv. 99) / mp to cast spells / auto battles / cut scenes only after u beat a boss / air ship / damage stays after battles (how u get brought back to life and cured after battles i find makes the game WAY!!! TO EASY!!!!!)

I'm only 10 hours in, but as far as FF games go, this one is stellar. The game has some of the highest production values I've seen - right up there with Mass Effect 2 as far as recent games that have been given the royal treatment.

Like ME2 it's also very streamlined, so it plays at a much quicker pace than many RPGs, but sacrifices some of the leveling & collection aspects. This is fine for me since I've got kids/wife/job, but it may turn off some fans of intense RPGs.

Bottom line - if you like the FF series, you'll probably like this. It is amazing to play and equally incredible to watch.

One last soapbox moment - how stupid are you to think this series is sacred to Sony? All that means is you're too young to remember when FF was on Nintendo. The exact same BS was spewed when Sony announced FF VII. Why does it matter if it's on multiple systems? If you have a problem with that, then go to your local community college and take Economics 101. Seriously - it doesn't make companies evil to release games on multiple systems, it makes them smart.

You will find all of these are RPG's. Yes some are old but look at the spitit and heart that these have.
