Fallout 3

A huge, varied, epic, ambitious masterpiece

Words: on October 28, 2008

Nobody knows who dropped the first bomb, and nobody cares. 200 years have passed since a nuclear war between the U.S. and China reduced the planet to cinders, and humanity has only one concern: survival. The fallout not only destroyed civilisation, but twisted and distorted it. Humans mutated into feral monsters, water and plants were irradiated and animals grew in ferocity. But for you, life is peachy. For the past 19 years you’ve been living with your dad in Vault 101, a nuclear fallout shelter buried deep underground on the outskirts of Washington DC.

Fallout’s one of the biggest, deepest RPGs out there. Not a role-playing fan? It’s also a brutal and accomplished FPS. It tells an incredible story across 100+ hours, but it’s also packed with Call of Duty-style set-pieces. As we type, we’re 29 hours in and have finished the main story, but the volume of worthy remaining side quests is boggling. It’s a measure of Fallout’s depth that it begins with your birth – you emerge from the womb in first-person view, with squealing and crying that you control yourself. Your vision’s blurred, but you can just about see your dad (Liam Neeson), his face obscured by a surgical mask. “Let’s see what you’ll look like when you’re all grown up”, he whispers as a nearby monitor flickers to life, displaying the game’s character creation tool.

The editor is flexible, but no matter how much you adjust the sliders your character will always look vaguely the same; handsome, slim and youthful – mercifully, your appearance has no bearing on the plot. It’s in your character’s stats and abilities that the depth of customisation lies. As you go through your youth and teenage years, you’ll shape your character via a series of clever interactive ‘minigames’. In one you flick through a toddler’s book called ‘You’re SPECIAL!’ which determines your core stats: strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck. In another, you take an exam called the GOAT (Generalised Occupational Aptitude Test) that judges how good you’ll be at things like sneaking, using weapons, picking locks and bartering with merchants.

You’ll spend about an hour and a half in Vault 101, making friends, fighting bullies, struggling with moral decisions and completing tutorials. We won’t say exactly what happens as it’s one of the most compelling, intriguing parts of the game, but eventually you leave the confines of your lead-lined tomb and emerge blinking into the outside world. This is where Fallout 3 really begins. You’ll prickle with relief at escaping the claustrophobia of the Vault – the sun’s blinding – only for icy trepidation to take hold as your eyes adjust to the numbing desolation outside. This isn’t a game of rich forests, and lush spires, but cruel, brown open wasteland and haunting symbols of times past.

I stopped playing games some years ago after i left to go to college, and never really thought I'd get back into the whole scene again. This game changed that. 'nuff said.

I liked the game, but Oblivion was far better :)

I DID really enjoy it though. I wouldve never imagined me playing a FPS, (im totally into rpgs like Star Ocean, Infinite Undiscovery and of course Oblivion) but hey, this game surprised me. Its a good buy. But I do agree on the point about the side-quests not being as satisfying as in Oblivion. Still, I love Bethesda. YOU RULE!

what a load of shit. i get bored after 35 hours of playing, unless the game has good, fun free-roam like gta4, far cry 2 or brilliant online play like cod4. unless this has a brilliantly arsenal of guns like mgs4, or realism like far cry 2, it's not getting my cash. one of my mates is getting it for christmas so i'll play his but it's resistance 2 and far cry 2 (i haven't fully played it yet) for christmas, then killzone 2 in february, then resi 5 in march, then red faction 3.

SPOILER: A quote from the second page: "In Oblivion you felt as if your choices were affecting communities, but the scope of your actions in Fallout is disappointingly limited." I happen to know though a IGN gameplay video that one quest (If you want to be a bad guy) has you detinate Megaton's Bomb vapourising the town! I think that would qualify as affecting a community.

What I want to know is how does this game compare to Oblivion: The Elder Scrolls? I played that and thought it was a little repetitive although the graphics were great.

Am i the only person that has noticed an inconsistancy about the fallout coverage? the review says at the start that there is 100+ hours of play time with plenty of side missons to keep you buisy after the main story, yet it then goes on to mark the game down for not having enough, also the reviewer said that the ps3 version is the worst looking yet on the comparison article i read on this very site says that they are identicle in near enough every way,so whats going on? i think this site has gotten worse over the years theres too many fan boys working for games companies and magazines now, let me know what u lot think.

LACK of side-quests? Usually side-quests suck. Why is that a bad thing?

this game is one of the best ever, and will probably remain in my top 5 PS3 games forever.

i stopped with playing the game recently, until the DLC's come out for PS3 as well.
Since microsoft had to buy of the DLC rights from bethesda for 50.000.000 dollars, i have lost a lot of trust in bethesda for accepting this offer.

for anyone that doesn't know yet:
Fallout 3 PS3 DLC's are coming end of september this year,
first is: Broken steel - level cap 30, play on after main storyline.

then comes: operation anchorage: take part of the greatest battle in history in a simulator, the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska.

3rd is: The Pitt, travel to the town of Pittsburgh and choose between sides of slavers and slaves.

4th is: Point outlook, massive new open swampland-like territory with lots of new monsters and quests (like swamplurks)

5th and probably will be: Mothership Zeta, the aliens have returned, and they're pissed off, enter the mothership and battle with alien blasters and firelances like you never did before.

all dlc's will come 4-6 weeks after the last one
