Killzone 2: 2005, '07 and '08 graphics compared in video

And why a lot of people owe Sony an apology

Words: Justin Towell, GamesRadar UK

E3 2005 gave us the infamous MotorStorm and Killzone 2 trailers. They looked amazing - too good to be true. And of course, they were too good to be true, generated as 'target footage' by Sony. MotorStorm came close (sort of) but failed. And now we've got playable preview version of Killzone 2 sitting in our PS3, we can tell you that it doesn't look as good as that early footage.

It looks better.

Don't believe us? Then take a look at this video which shows you the E3 2005 target footage, interspersed with similar scenes from our copy of the game. The overall effect is clear - most of what happens looks better in the real thing.

Our second video compares the 'gameplay footage' officially released by Sony last year with a direct feed from our preview version of the game. The main differences we can see are a vastly reduced fire trail from the downed personnel carrier, and the game does pause to load momentarily as Alpha team lands, where it doesn't in last year's trailer.

We're looking forward to receiving a review copy of the game. In the mean-time, check out our most recent preview, or our experience of the multiplayer mode. But the simple fact is, Killzone 2 looks sensational and not only matches that jaw-dropping early showing but even surpasses it in places. Sony deserves an apology - it really did deliver on this one.

F1rst! I can't wait for this game. I was in the beta, and it already looked amazing, and everyone says that the finished game will look even better.

Can't wait to early 2009 this Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter 4 are already getting me excited about the next year in games. Though I'm pretty broke because of this year this game looks like a buy as of now.

Hopefully what people have been saying about the COD4 feel for the controls because I loved COD4. Here's hoping it turns out great.

The absolute one thing I'm cynical about for this Game? Controls. And even there, it barely falters, only with the fact of a Hold-Crouch( I hated this in Resistance: Fall of Man.) and click-on Iron sites. Otherwise, I'm all for Febuary 27th.

wow, that its actually BETTER is amazing

Its probably not true but in the new game informer (drake cover) it said that killzone was going to be on the 360
John-117  - 11 months 7 days ago
@radicle94 Geurilla Games was acquired by sony in 2005, and in turn sony owns rights to Killzone 2.

I'm going to say 100% that it was a misprint. Possibly just a template where the 360 and PC parts weren't taken out.

It looks great, and it plays just as good. but if anyone has noticed, it doesn't sound nearly as awesome as that first trailer. I hope that more games adopt HDR sound, it just makes a game that much better.

Its games like this that make me hate Halo. Clones are just as boring as the one they clone from. It pisses me off. KZ one sucked and the media is treating this like it's Jesus's second coming, when in reality its just like every other FPS that has released since Halo 1 came out! Back up a good game like Okami or Braid and feel good about your self instead of falling into the mainstream gaming propaganda Lol!
FriendlyFire  - 11 months 7 days ago
From what you're saying all FPS games are basically clones of Halo and none should ever be played again.

You sure that's "mainstream gaming propaganda" or just that many people actually LIKE the games?

I love how GR tries to compare graphics after compressing the shit out of the video.
Furyspittles  - 11 months 7 days ago
haha, i second that love.
anyway, jeez, this looks amazing...wasnt sure about it, seeing its a shoot em up, but this DEFINATELY looks worth playing.
and who honestly gives a crap about grey colours? that sure as heck isnt what i think about when i watch that video. bet it isnt what ill be thinking about when i play the game either.

YAY FOR CINEMATIC'S!!! CAN'T WAIT FOR THE SLOW GAMEPLAY!!.....I'm just being a fanboy. It looks fine.
GamesRadarJustinTowell  - 11 months 7 days ago
@ELpork - It's true that a lot of that is FMA cinematic, but the flamethrower and rocket launcher bits are in game, being played by yours truly. And I think you'll agree the graphics there are just as detailed as the cut scenes.

It looks like the grenade launcher is now a flashlight.
