10 game ads that are horribly up their own ass

The pompous game-peddling commercials that love to love themselves

Words: Dave Meikleham, GamesRadar UK

Most game ads are usually a bit rubbish. But we can forgive them, because whether pushing Z listers ‘enjoying’ entertaining interactive products or offending our ears with a cheesy, booming voice-over, most of them are just charmingly clueless. The following ads are guilty of a much worse crime, though. They all utterly adore themselves. Self-indulgent, self-loving bullshit, below you’ll find cynical commercials that have all gleefully bought into their own hype and need to be taken down a peg… or 20.

The one where it's a mad, mad, mad, mad world

Pompously promoting: Gears of War

Don’t get us wrong. We kinda like this advert. Atmospheric and brooding, it creates a sense of dread in synch with the game’s nihilistic view of mankind’s future. But c’mon, it’s so far up its own ass Marcus and co. have set up base camp at peak pretentious, situated at the very summit of Mount Rectum.

How it should have been advertised

The commercial’s isolationist tone isn’t exactly replicated in a title built on moronic jock banter and homoerotic backslapping. The ghostly ethereal tones of Gary Jules are nowhere near manly enough for Epic’s testosterone-fuelled adventure. Instead, Microsoft should have saved itself a pack of dosh and gone for something along the lines of this…

The one with David Lynch's blind Inuit

Pompously promoting: PS2

Ah, good old Davie Lynch. Always the go-to-guy when you need a Hollywood helmer who’s going to cook you up some proper bat shit crazy, subversive celluloid shenanigans. While most of the director’s early PS2 ads are just weird (like this sleep running mutt or wolf-loving maniac) the above video is simply plain pretentious. Trying to be all profound in stating awareness is more important than working human peepers, it all delves into self-indulgent wankery.

How it should have been advertised

How about giving us a reason why we should shell out 300 smackers on a PS2, when it’s only really worthwhile launch game was SSX? That or at least have the good grace to devote five seconds away from an old dude’s leathery face to tell us about the built-in DVD player or the DualShock’s pressure-sensitive buttons. Perhaps kicking the proverbial out of its nearest underpowered competitor might have been the way to go.

But didn't you say that Gears Of War's ad music made a nice change from "guitar laden heavy metal"??

Why is the Halo franchise not only milking itself now but putting god damn emotional commercials which look like they should be advertising movies instead. yes its agood game we get it, but thats all it is a game

i don't like Halo 3, or Halo ODST. But I did like the ODST advert. But I had to switch off the GOW2 advert. COLE TRAIN? Watching a FLOWER? Through a SNIPER SCOPE?

Wow, this article was just full of vitriol. According to this every video game ad should be some form of Powerthirst. I don't know, maybe I just like my commercials to feel less like commercials. Besides, I'm pretty sure the ODST ad is the first time Welsh has been used in an advertisement for a major media property. That's got to be worth something, right?

so the advert for gears of war is up its own ass, the gameplay and storyline by far make up for it, and GOW1 doesnt have great multiplayer, but the sequel is outstanding

I actually liked the ad for Prince of Persia. I really like the song and it actually goes pretty well with the video.

As for ultra-dramatic ads for mindless shooters... it's just awful!

I actually really liked the Gears of War ads, but Dave's right: they're not at all reflective of the experience of playing the games. The issue here isn't that the ads were bad, necessarily, but that they look pretentious when one examines what it is they're selling.

I was a lil' perturbed at first for the PoP '08 ad, I thought it was going to be Sigur Ros...It wasn't though, then I found out it was Sia's "Breathe Me," I had no idea that song was used in the PoP '08 advert!! Awesome!!

@Daedazrael

I assuming/hoping the "How it should have been advertised" parts were tongue-in-cheek because I like creative ads. It would very much dissuade me from buying a game if the ad was just "Look! We've got boobs and guns!"

I think the Gears Of War 1 advert would have been a lot better with Tears For Fears' version of "Mad World"...but I guess that's just me. I'm not a big fan of the Gary Jules version.

Actually, is it quite sad that I have most of the songs used in these adverts on my iPod?

wait...rather than create an epic commercial that gets people pumped up(and also getting all their friends to check it out getting them pumped up), you should just go and tell them all, "meh, we have an ok game, so it's your call whether you want to buy it or not"? And on top of that you're pulling commercials that contain different songs from the ones that were widely produced (and far superior)? And that commercials shouldn't try to rope in a different crowd when they've already guaranteed that all the testosterone junkies are gonna buy it any way? And weren't virtually every single one of these games that were advertised in such a manner massively successful?

Here's one for you: I think this article is horribly up its own ass. In agreement with Daedazrael, all your "how it should have been" comments are basically the premise for a number of powerthirst commercials.

Fail.

So what if they are pretentious? The best ones here do the thing they are designed to do in the best ways: make you want to play them.

I disagree about SSX being the only good release game for PS2. I loved ATV Offroad Fury.
