E3 2010: Kingdom Hearts 3D - Sora's young again

Kingdom Hearts 3D is currently in development for Nintendo's gorgeous new 3DS handheld. It is (believe it or not) the eighth Kingdom Hearts game, which means the plot has become... how shall I say it... rather complex.

It is, then, little surprise to see young Sora and Riku in the press shots and demo version at E3. The game is looking superb even at this early stage. But what could the reason be for young Sora's presence?

Above: Young Sora and Riku. Fresh of face and... grey of hair? Hmmm...

The game's director, Tetsuya Nomura has stated that the game is not a remake of the original, so that's ruled out. This leaves only a couple of logical reasons.

I've been having these weird thoughts lately...

Could the game be set in a dream? One of the dreams Sora had on Destiny Islands? This would allow the plot to intertwine with the existing games at any and every point. Memories of the first game could keep the action familiar, more focused in a simple story and keep development costs down as existing assets could be re-used. It would also allow a new plot to be added in with new locations.

Above: It all looks familiar, but only because the world list isn't final

Alternatively, it really could just be set immediately after the events of the first game. If Riku and Sora are definitely in, could the '3D' that features in the forthcoming game name refer to 'three destinies'? Imagine a co-op adventure with three players controlling Riku, Sora and Kairi. That would undoubtedly pursuade many parents to buy a second system for their addicted offspring. The gameplay would easily work with drop-in/drop-out control.

The final possibility would be a set-up similar to Chain of Memories, which handily left the plot virtually the same at the end of the game as it was at the start. You can make as many of those as you like and still not dramatically affect canon.

Above: Let's hope the music for Traverse Town has been redone. Please!

The bottom line is, Kingdom Hearts on Nintendo 3DS is a mouthwatering prospect - one look at the press shots scattered around this page will tell you it's going to be great. As long as it keeps the pace up and maintains Riku and Sora as the lead characters (along with Donald Duck, of course), we'll be happy. Confused, but happy.

Alot of Speculation is that these game is about Sora and Riku's mastery test to become full fledged Keyblade Masters from what I hear it hints to this in Coded.

@ Darx Star you forgot keyblade wars u can watch the trailer on youtube and also whens coded come out in US
  • V13Dragongal - June 19, 2010 4:43 p.m.

I was thinking it would be before the first one, but then wheres the fun in that? You would just be stuck on the island with no keyblade. So mabey Sora and Riku get sucked throught time, end up at the island, and now they are trying to get back with Kairi's help even though she has no idea whats going on. They fight heartless that appear on the island, ect. Just as they get off the island, they get sucked through time again and end up at traverse town before the keyhiole is sealed. And then the same thing would happon so they would end up at all difforent worlds. Until finally they get to present wondering what the hell happoned?

The dust of exploded beliefs may make a fine sunset, as Mr. Geoffrey Madan has said.

Kingdom Hearts: Echoes Of Nil! Luxord survived with the power of time, and he goes back to the past to kill Sora! Meanwhile, players can experience what Riku went through with Maleficent in the Riku mode! And then Kairi has to save Aqua! And the big bad has nothing to do with Xehanort! The villain is a possesed Hayner! With green hair! And you can do a rock off minigame with Demyx! Who is a party member and still has awesome dialogue! That would be so cool. And isn't it the 7th? Kingdom Hearts Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories Kingdom Hearts II Kingdom Hearts: Coded Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep

Glad to finally find someone else who cares about the KH series. Thanks, Justin, for actually thinking about the deepness of the uniquely crafted series :D Anyway, my thoughts on the game will be tat Traverse Town will once again be the hub world, but that they will use older Disney movies for the game. 'Cause the newer ones are kinda crap. Hopefully, Hikaru will make an appearance in the game's soundtrack, maybe even creating all the music in-game. A man can dream, right?

@Doctalen Yeah I agree, It's about time for number 3. Although I have a good feeling about this one mainly because it actually features SORA AND RIKU as the characters. Not Roxas or Tidus etc. Also if we're lucky it won't have a weird as fuck combat system (i.e. cards).
  • animeman - June 18, 2010 5:54 p.m.

I really don't have a clue what the story mite be and I dont care. I laove Kingdom Hearts and I will love this game. The omly reason I am going to buy a 3DS is so I can get this game.
  • RonnyLive19881 - June 18, 2010 5:42 p.m.

You know a Port with new features isn't necessarily a "remake". It can't be set after KH1 or before it because from what I remember the trio had never been off the island(at least I think) at that point and if it is set in a dream, that would mean the end of the game would be Sora waking up and forgetting everything so that wouldn't be fun at all lol(this is Kingdom Hearts, not a Stephen King novel.).
  • Doctalen - June 18, 2010 5:42 p.m.

It will be a bull shit filler that makes no sense at all. I am tired of these half-assed sequels to the prequel that make no fucking sense. Seriously just make the third game already and make it make sense.
  • Zanthis - June 18, 2010 5:20 p.m.

Regardless, it seems like it will be, while not a proper kingdom hearts, one with characters taht I care about while I care about them. Looking forward to it.
  • SoutheastSam - June 18, 2010 3:53 p.m.

    Maybe it's a demo for a PS3 KH
  • Life - June 18, 2010 3:46 p.m.

With the way things work in Kingdom Hearts, some mysterious 4th faction. different from heartless, unbirths, and unknowns actually bend space and time and bring Sora back to Destiny Island to stop him from getting the keyblade in the first place. BUT WAIT, they're leader is actually Ansem's/ Xemnas's heartless, that didn't die at the end of the first game, but survived underneath kingdom hearts, sucking the life force out of the planets by the tree roots, and has now become ultra powerful yaddayaddayadda. Sora loses the keyblade, and must use the power of heart (captina planet anyone) to restore life to the worlds with the help of his trusty sidekicks donald and goofy, with random help from the pretty-boy riku, as well as other ff characters, such as leon/squall, cloud, aerith, yuffie, and i'm sure penelo, vaan, basch, or ashe will appear somewhere as well. THEN Roxas actually comes to the rescue in the final battle, with the help of everyone's heartless and unknown and unbirth and fourth-faction-x and they use the power of mickey mouse and gigantic keys to blow up the ultimate bad guy, who turns out to be Walt Disney/Hironobu Sakaguchi fusion wielding a giant double edged keyblad. And then they go eat popou fruit on the beach until a mysterious letter shows up from king mickey telling them thanks but the princess is in another castle. THE END
