Sega Superstars Tennis

Sonic and his brand mates enjoy more passable games of tennis, only now it's smaller

This tinied-down version of the recent Wii smasher should in theory be more fiddly and less satisfying than its big bro. But somehow they’ve squeezed all the better bits in, and bypassed all that unsatisfying control business. You’ll still be mashing them thumbs up on the minigames, but you’re in for a smoother, more simplified ride - and the sheer joy of all the old school Sega nostalgia making up for the frustrating bits.

You’ll get the gist of the tennis proper pretty quickly, and the ball is far easier to control in this compact form - you’ll be grinning with warped glee as you force your opponent to toddle around the court like an asthmatic kitten. But it’s the minigames that offer the most fun. Compact tennis-based versions of bygone gems like Jet Set Radio, ChuChu Rocket and Space Harrier will have you sighing doey-eyed for the old days.

Like its larger sibling it’ll wind you up as much as challenge your finely-honed tennis skills. But as a happy-go-lucky bit of racket-fuelled froth it’ll keep you pleasantly diverted.
