Remember when politicians were oblivious to the depths of gaming culture? Those days are long gone. Last October, Congress began investigating virtual worlds to determine how the in-game earnings of those who play might be taxable. Although not always officially sanctioned by the developers, players have been converting in-game currencies and goods to real life wealth since the early days of Ultima Online, with Second Life real estate mogul Anshe Chung claiming last year to have earned more

Microsoft rolled into our offices this morning toting a handful of very pretty, shiny toys - toys that you'll be playing with at some unspecified time in the future. You've probably heard of these upcoming accessories already, but we got to see 'em and touch 'em, and we wanted to share. For instance, most people know about the Xbox 360 Vision digital camera, but we're happy to report that the teeny digital eyeball not only works wonderfully, but you're already ready to use it. The dashboard

Several internet reports are coming in with claims that Microsoft has begun installing second heatsinks into Xbox 360s sent in for repair. This is of particular interest to most 360 owners of course, because overheating has seemingly been the cause of the "red lights of death" problem which has been bricking consoles. One Team Xbox user reports the second heatsink in his repaired 360, which TXB claims was installed by Microsoft to provide additional cooling for the Xenos GPU, and thus help

With their minds firmly fixed on sparkly new games and the like, whenever the press converge on a conference they tend to waltz past the event's employed meeters and greeters without so much as a grunt of acknowledgement, never noticing the sterling work the hosts are doing as they shepherd the shambling herds of nerds. But not GamesRadar. We appreciate these lovely people and we want to get to know them better. So at last night's Microsoft Conference we thought we'd take the time to find out a

Sept 03 2007 As some game developers reportedly continue to struggle working with PS3, comments made by Sony Computer Entertainment's president, Kaz Hirai, in the latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine suggest that the Sony boss is happy that developing for the machine is proving to be a headache for some coders. "If you look back at the commentary we received when we launched PS2, there was a lot of talk to the effect that 'It's very difficult to program for' and 'It's easier on a

Oct 25, 2007 Ever wanted to be evil? Really evil? Well, then you're mostly out of luck. Videogames are awash with brooding anti-heroes who are gruff and mean but ultimately good, but genuine villains in the lead role are pretty rare. For that matter, the few games with villainous leads tend to defuse them by pitting them exclusively against people who are even worse than they are (Manhunt, GoldenEye: Rogue Agent), or by playing up the whole "evil" angle for laughs (Overlord, Disgaea). Boo to

Nov 27, 2007 Rumours of an Elder Scrolls MMO have taken a fresh turn following the licensing of MMO tech HeroEngine by Bethesda sister company ZeniMax Online Studios. ZeniMax Online has been set up to focus purely on development in the massively multilayer online arena. HeroEngine has also been licensed by BioWare for its still top secret MMO, which rumours have said is set in the world of KOTOR. What's HeroEngine? Creator SimuTronics explains, "HeroEngine is an MMO development team's

Jan 7, 2008 There's promise of "important" Xbox news from Bill Gates' appearance at next week's CES in Las Vegas, but despite the rumours it looks like a HD-DVD enabled Xbox 360 won't be revealed at the Sin City electronics show.Taking a sharp detour from its "we don't comment on rumours" policy, one Microsoft spokesperson said, "we have reiterated multiple times since launching the Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player that we have no plans to integrate an HD-DVD player in to the Xbox 360," in an interview

Rome. It's home to the Colosseum, St. Peter's Basilica, and the Pantheon. But coming soon, there will actually be something cool there - a videogame museum! The ViGaMus will open its doors next year, and the people behind the project say it's the first dedicated museum for videogames to be built outside of the US or Japan...
