6 things Capcom need to do with Resident Evil 6

More scares, more puzzles... oh, and a helping of Barry Burton wouldn't go amiss, either

Words: on March 17, 2010

Resi 5 was a bad photocopy of an awesome game. Most of us accept this. Sure, it had its merits (co-op was definitely a success), but for many die-hard survival horror fans it had lost that spark that made Leon’s adventure so memorable. Developers Capcom, fresh on the heels of creating one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed games of all time, knew they could rest on their laurels a bit when it game to Chris’ murderous African escapades. Hell, series creator Shinji Mikami even admitted it didn’t need to change the series. But did concede Resi 6 would have to reinvent it.

With that in mind, we think it’s high time we kick the Resident Evil hype train back into gear. With the recently released, and frankly ace, Lost in Nightmares DLC, we’re hungry for news on the next full-fat game. And to help the Capcom bigwigs, we’ve put together a wish list of all the stuff we want fixed for the survival horror series’ latest chapter. Oh, and boys, when you’re sending us those royalty checks, GamesRadar is one word. Cool?

Get the scares back

Suriv…val horr…or? What’s that? This is the biggie. The last two games have lost the frights that made the PS1 games so enduring. The fourth game got away with it thanks to amazing mechanics and the small fact it damn near reinvented the genre. Plus there were still a couple of sections that were pretty scary (that bit with Salazar’s right hand demon in the sewers, anyone?). Redfield and Sheva’s game wasn’t so lucky, being pretty much fright free.

Lost in Nightmares (which takes players back to a near carbon copy of the mansion from the first game) shows Capcom still has what it takes to unsettle and scare the bejesus out of us. The DLC’s opening half hour doesn’t have a single baddie in it, yet still manages to out-scare Resi 5 with ease. It’s all about creating an uneasy atmosphere, which LiN nails. Go back to less enemies, while cranking up the tension through mood and music, and we might just have one scary-ass series back on our hands. Oh, and introducing an enemy along the lines of the fella below would be just swell, too.

Above: Nemesis rules. That is all

Get the gore back

Resident Evil 5 sent the little gore hound in all of us for a timeout. Camera angles that panned away right before decapitation money shots. Ground finishers that saw Chris and Sheva merely stamp on Majinis' chests rather than bust open their craniums like undead piñatas. A total lack of giant bugs capable off melting our faces off. C’mon, we want all the properly grizzly shit back. Do that, and you can set the game in an abandoned, haunted box factory for all we care.

Above: Seriously, this could be the perfect location for any self-respecting horror series. Just think of all the potential paper cuts

I disagree with the above poster comment about "who actually cares about Jill". Well, I do.

Resident Evil 6 should star Jill Valentine or at least go back to the way Resident Evil 1 and 2 did: give you the ability to play at least 2 characters in the game -- each with their own perspective.

If I can't play as Jill, then this series is pretty much dead. I've got RE 1 - 5 and loved them all, especially the 3rd.

Besides, you don't kill off the characters that made the series. That's a mistake. It's been done before and it was a complete disaster. Let's hope CAPCOM doesn't take advise from the above columnist.

Have to agree with everything in this article. While I enjoyed RE5, it wasn't nowhere near as good as RE4

@david meikleham you encounter baddies in the mansion if you play on professional mode which scared the piss out of me cuz it was my second playthrough of lost in nightmares and i was totally not expecting it

I never got to play the old PS1 RE games, but having beaten 4, 5 and the horrendous Dead Aim, I was wondering what everyone was talking about, saying that it was the most terrifying series ever. I'd be curious to play current gen remakes of the first 3.

How about not having the zombies(or infected whatever they are now) shoot guns?

How about bringing back ammo and health scarcity?

How about setting the game in predominantly dark claustrophobic places again?

Im all for Capcom modernizing the series, but honestly Resident Evil games should not have cover systems and loot drops.

I really can´t think about any japanese working in the Resident Team reading this, but let´s be imaginative: All that GR Staff said was right, Resi could really use all of that but you know what?
1-No more currency ok. The old Merchant was in the game, but what about the RE5 impossible shop? We are not playing Fallout.
2-To buff the weapon, find the kits, just like in RE2, so the weapon changes visually too.
3-Tension right? What about shoot your partner AND damage her/him in the process?
4-A fast menu is a very welcome add, but what if they kept a bag in the back to a slow but bigger inventory too?
5-The virus thing is over, but a contamination could add more despair to a wounded player.
6-A mutated heroine/hero could be good too: Krauzer and Wesker proved that. And I really would like to play with a girl like Alexia, it would be the closest thing to a new Parasite Eve...
7-Old characters showing up is always a good point, so if a BSAA game was done, we could meet the old staff in there, and even in some missions too. Carlos, Sherry, Ada, Josh and others.
    8-Create-a-Survivor: Why not?
9-Remember when Capcom saind that RE5 could have dehydration as a hazard? This could come in had too: Snow, Sun, BioHazards, Radiation, Heat, all of this could change the way we face things.
10-If Chris and Sheva are in the game, let me chose witch one I want to play from the beginning.
11-No more senseless dropping(unless we are playing Mercs): why a man holding a bottle would have a landmine?
12-Want to make a DLC, put more levels and characters in the Mercs mode, new places to go, some good expansions, but do not put clothes ok.
    AND
13-In the Mercs, let us choose a character, her/his cloths and surviving kit ok. I want to play with the STARS Chris Using the kit from Wesker Midnight. The kits are important to control the way you play, but why reduce it to only one character? The more custom options we have at hand, the more we experiment and the more we play. You don´t need to mess with the personal actions, but let us chose the weapons and the clothes we will use.
Sorry for the size and some english hiccups.

Listen to Columbo. If you didn't know who that is at the end...that's Columbo, and you should be ashamed.

Getting rid of Jill and Leon would be a catastrophe. Please ignore that suggestionn, Capcom.

I'm sorry, but Dead Space is now the franchise to beat as far as scare tactics go. It just nails it with the amazing sound and lighting and half the time, the scariest parts involve no enemies. Resident Evil is a dead franchise and Capcom just needs to create a new IP. They're starting to become Nintendo with the constant recycling of games and characters. I love that Sony is ending God of War and not cheapening the franchise with constant spinoffs and reboots. If a new RE is made, a new cast would be great, but a Leon cameo is a must!

KONICHIWA!!! I COMPLETELY AGREE!!!!! Everyone says that u shouldn't allow the gamer to move and shoot because of the suspense, but in each new game, the enemies are becoming faster and faster and if u can't move and shoot, ur screwed alot of times. Love the idea of more horror, gore, and new characters also! Great job on the list and love the last picture!! LOLZ!! ;) :O

Put Resi6 in a city during a zombie (yes, zombie) outbreak. Basically make it 28 Weeks Later: The Game.
