It's glad to see more 'actual' great heroines in the mainstream games...

    The Boss form MGS 3

Veronica from Fallout NV? Not only is she a good female character, but a good gay character to boot.

What exactly counts as "inspirational" anyway? Because this list, to me, seems more like a generic list of female characters that are vaguely well-written. It's missing stuff from JRPGs (Virginia from Wild Arms 3 for one), and most of it came from games that just came out recently. It's missing people like Jade of BG&E, The Boss from MGS3, Heather from Silent Hill 3...I could go on. Hell, couldn't you at least pick more female characters that are protagonists? Maybe those could be more "inspirational" than the ones you picked here, especially more than that one commander lady from Battlefield 4.

I've only played the first Portal so idk if theres more to it but can GLaDOS be considered a female seeing as shes a computer/robot
  • TheCakeIsaPie - March 12, 2014 11:38 a.m.

Yes, but I can't say why without spoiling a plot point from "Portal 2."

Well, just looking at what her name stands for, it's pretty clear she's more than machine.

If I nay throw my two cents in: Cortana Kat from Halo Reach Tifa Yuna The Boss Meryl Silverburgh Jack from ME Tali'zorah Liara- ok pretty much every female character in Mass Effect Ashe from FF XII Frickin' Elizabeth, how did you miss her off? Jodie Holmes Elena Fisher James Kidd/Mary Read from Black Flag I'm sure there's more I'm missing, but that was just off the top of my head.

Why do lists about strong female characters always disregard entire genres like JRPGs, fighters or VNs? The gameplay of these genres doesn't drastically limit the number of characters in their stories like shooter or action games do, the result of this is the larger cast gives these games a chance to make a more varied set of characters. For example I recently finished playing danganronpa, a murder mystery VN/puzzle game set in a prestigious highschool for only the ultimate students and some of the characters are definitely stronger in a contemporary sense than some of these characters. There's kyoko, the ultimate detective who is the obvious example of a strong character as she uses her intellect to overcome the masterminds plan and without her most of the murder cases wouldn't have been solved. There's Sakura, the ultimate martial artist, she is strong due to her physique, loyalty and honour. Celeste, the ultimate gambler uses cunning to trick others into doing her bidding and while immoral it's still a great showcase of her skill. Aoi, the ultimate swimmer is a kind, considerate person and even though she isn't the brightest person but she still tries to help the group. The large roster of characters also makes room for other female characters that don't show a great deal of characteristics that could be deemed strong which is good. Also I've never actually considered Lara Croft a strong female character, I feel that she's mentioned on every list regarding this topic because it's expected.

I have to agree with the VN's bro. I've played 'plenty' of great VN's with 'plenty' of great (and inspirational) females in them. I guess it's because of 3 things: the writers may not have much experience with them, the readers might not have much experience with them, and/or it "isn't a game" to a lot of people.

I am shocked JADE from Beyond Good & Evil isn't on here.

Hang on a minute, where the hell is The Boss from Metal Gear Solid 3? Not only is she one of the most strong willed characters I've seen in a game, but she was also a mother, which for some reason is an incredibly rare trait in a female video game character.
  • TheGooseinator - March 11, 2014 3:57 p.m.

Maybe Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII. She is a strong and vibrant character who had the misfortune of starring in a terrible gaming subseries XD
  • Veedot - March 12, 2014 8:15 a.m.

No Lightning is a bland, boring, uninteresting, highly overused character trope from a mediocre trilogy Motomu Toriyama keeps shoving down everyones throat
  • TheGooseinator - March 12, 2014 12:09 p.m.

    Okay then XD

I'm flabbergasted by this sudden hate for Gone Home! The fact that Sam was able to be a teenager, that she was written to make impulsive decisions and mistakes, shows how strong of a character she is! She is faced with challenges, and she is forced to act in her own way rather than simply being forgiven, which showcases her willpower and willingness to fight for what she believes in. And although her relationship could be considered hackneyed, it wasn't defined by her sexuality, but rather by the love she felt for her significant other. It's rare that games showcase pure love the way that Gone Home did, and that's a beautiful thing.
