Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time / Darkness Starter Guide

Version 1.4, by weirdguy8888 (aka Arthur Tam) who may be annoyed at

robotpenguins@aim.com, however much he dislikes it

I've written this guide down with help from ecstasy_hew, who scanned some

images from the "Pokemon: Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness -

Explorer's Guide" which as much as I can tell belongs to Nintendo. And the

last part about the auras related to ribbons came from reading info off of

serebii.net. So if any of this data is wrong please submit any corrections to

the proper folks. I guess that means me. And no, lacking fancy ASCII art does

Additional note....if you're going to ask questions that aren't related to

this guide, you'd be better off hitting the forums, since they answer a lot

faster and probably know more about it than me. And no, I have no idea what

"forums" I may be referring to but if there's a website showing this, I'll

pretty much bet a Joy Ribbon that they have a forums and that you can ask

All associated copyrights/trademarks belong to the legal owners of the

copyrights/trademarks.  Seriously.

This guide may not be used for profit or trade.  If you want to use this guide

anywhere else, you must not alter or remove any part of the guide.  Aside from

that, it's okay to take it with you and stick it anywhere without letting me

know, like on your generic Pokemon website/blog/underpants, unless you somehow

get me mad, perhaps by associating me with Hitler or making too many "your

mom" jokes, during which time I'll probably not allow you to copy the guide

anymore because I reserve the right to revoke this guide's usage on a whim,

because apparently I've got a copyright for this guide just by it being

published online.  Neat, huh?

1.4: 5/31/2008. Wow, looks like somebody at www.upokecenter.com keeps messing

with the PMD games' code. In addition to destroying most of the demand for

player to player rescues once again, there's a guide that is similar to mine

but has information that explains parts of the selection process for starter

Pokemon and auras that I didn't know before. Thanks for this information,

1.3: 5/27/2008. Lucky number 1.3. Dang, I totally forgot to check my mail.

A couple of you folks sent in a hot tip to get the partner you want. Kudos to

Albert Morgese and Jonathan Rhoades for pointing out something that must be

old news by now due to my neglect, but a valid addition to the guide

On a side note, I realize that there's way too many websites to stick in one

sentence, and therefore am going to just make a small, other section for it.

1.2: 4/25/2008. Added a small guide on starter peformance and team combos.

Mainly because I wanted to get a leg up on the other, nearly identical

1.1: 4/22/2008. Corrected info about partner picking. Added Neoseeker to

sentence that refers to websites that I know of that use this guide. Also

added this section about version information because it's the right thing to

do. Or so I've been told.

1.0: 4/20/2008. Initial version.  Not much else to say about that.

If you need this, you also need some help with your patience issues.  I mean,

there's only three sections, and even then they're all pretty much interlinked.

If you need me to go into an explanation of what this game is about or which

version to pick or if you should even pick up a copy of this game in the first

On the other hand, if you've chosen your game version, and now you're here,

looking at a silly personality test, saying "Hey, I don't want to do this!

I want to choose who to start with because I know what I want and no game's

gonna tell me what to do!"...

You've come to the right place.

There's a whopping 16 different starters to choose from, and this time there's

no gender restrictions on specific Pokemon.  Now you can be a male Skitty, and

the game won't judge you.  I mean, your friends still will, and if you

publicly admit to doing it on purpose nobody will ever respect you again, but

Veterans of the game might be dismayed to see some of their favorites gone,

having had their slots replaced by newer Pokemon.  You may want to figure out

who you want now.  Cause I'm not doing it for you.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you're one of those completionists, it turns out that the

Treecko family is only available from a special sidequest area if you don't

start with one, so if you don't want to wait until later in the game to get

There's 16 different personality types, and depending on which gender you

choose, will alter the way they determine who you will end up.  I've listed

them below, and all you need to do is run a quick search to see where your

fate will take you.  Or where you want to take your fate.

            Male/Female

Lonely:     Bulbasaur / Mudkip

Docile:     Charmander / Bulbasaur

Quirky:     Squirtle / Piplup

Brave:      Pikachu / Charmander

Sassy:      Meowth / Totodile

Calm:       Chikorita / Cyndaquil

Timid:      Cyndaquil / Turtwig

Jolly:      Totodile / Munchlax

Quiet:      Treecko / Chikorita

Hardy:      Torchic / Treecko

Rash:       Mudkip / Torchic

Hasty:      Skitty / Pikachu

Bold:       Turtwig / Squirtle

Naive:      Chimchar / Skitty

Impish:     Piplup / Chimchar

Relaxed:    Munchlax / Meowth

Found something you like? Good. Didn't find anything you liked? Too bad, pick

Once you've gotten a starter, you'll get a lecture on what your personality

type means, and after being warned about the inherent dangers of your

tendencies (because nobody knows how to psychoanalyze your whole life like a

video game) you will be given a random 7 out of the other possible Pokemon

that you would be able to pick, which are all the starters that are not the

same elemental type as your starter, and not a normal type Pokemon.  That

means that starting as a fire/water/grass type would give you 7 out of 10

choices, normal type Pokemon (Skitty, Munchlax, Meowth) would give you 7 out

of 13 choices, and picking Pikachu would allow you to choose 7 out of 12

choices. And if you don't see the partner that you want...it's because you

Haha, just kidding.  The game's only doing it because it loooooves you.

Incidently, if you do fail at life, here's a tip to win your life back, sent

in by Albert Morgese and Jonathan Rhoades: if you select a partner, it'll ask

you if you are sure if you want that partner. If you hated all the partners

and are sure that you don't want that deadbeat on your team, just say no, and

it'll bring you back to the list again, only this time it'll generate a new

selection list. In a roundabout way, you can force the game to give you your

In order to use this list to the fullest potential, I expect that you'll use

your browser's search function (in most cases, Ctrl+F) to search for a highly

specific part of your question that contains a unique set of words.  For

instance, the question listed directly below this descriptive note has words

such as "final mile," "last stretch," and "Stop running."  Any of these three

would bring you straight to where you want to be.  On the other hand,

searching for words like "the," "but," and "and" is pretty much just plain

Basically, in order to get the personality type you want, aim for the answers

that add points to that personality's rating.  The questions are picked at

random and may not apply to what you want to get, so in those cases aim for

the question that gives the least amount of points to traits and try to

distribute them evenly to avoid accidently promoting a dominant personality

that you didn't want to go with. After eight questions, the game stops and

decides right there.  If two traits tied, it'll flip a coin and pick either

one, and let you know which two they were and what it chose.  You can always

reset the game if you end up with something you don't like, so keep trying!

For those who are REALLY obsessive about this, the information from

upokecenter.com indicates that there are sixteen sets of questions, from which

eight sets are picked, and a question from each set selected, all at random,

including the order in which the questions are asked. This means that if

you're looking out for a particular trait, and are looking for particular

questions, you can figure out when these particular questions are not

Of course, it's way easier to go with the flow and balance the nondesirable

At this point, you'll be told to hold your finger to the screen while the game

analyzes your biosignals using what I like to call "moodring tech".  There's

The way the game figures out which color to go with seems to be mostly based

on what you picked as the background color for your DS console window at

startup, although according to the information at upokecenter.com there's a

small chance that it'll decide to assign you an aura color based on the last

character of the MAC address of your DS. Since you probably have one or more

WiFi compatible games who have already had this address registered into

memory, it's probably best that you don't mess with it in order to manipulate

the choice of the "alternate" aura color, which is seldom used in the first

place. And I'm not gonna list which character of the hexadecimal system is

attributed to which color, since it's pretty much pointless to think about it.

Many people ask "What does an aura do?"

Well, right now, there's only one observable effect from the choice of your

aura.  If you have a colored ribbon, it will only bestow bonuses if your aura

is the same color of that ribbon.  All the other ribbons are useless to you.

And that's all I know about it.
