Afterworld will challenge you to build a post-apocalyptic empire from scratch
Afterworld is a grand strategy game that evolves from approachable beginnings to a rich and complex experience
Your task in Afterworld is to raise an empire upon the ashes of a North America decimated by apocalyptic conflict, which is quite a weight to place on your shoulders. If the concept of a grand strategy game on this scale feels somewhat overwhelming then don't worry: Paradox Interactive are developing an experience that gradually grows from approachable beginnings into greater complexity so you can learn the ropes right alongside your band of survivors.
You start out with a small band from one of several playable Origins, such as shelterfolk emerging from their failing nuclear bunker, and must establish your initial settlements in the wastelands. Supplies are scarce at this stage, so you'll need to direct your group to scavenge food, water, and fuel, then manage your limited resources effectively to keep everyone alive. Continue exploring the procedurally generated map, as discoveries help unlock new advances to shape your progress.
As you expand your tribe and construct new settlements, you can set up convoys and supply lines to transport resources to where they're most needed. If you've drained an area dry then you'll need to be flexible and move your settlements on to fresh lands, meaning your starting location may not remain your capital as you try to meet the growing requirements of your people.
Once your initial survival has been taken care of, it's up to you to shape your society and decide what sort of nation you want to build, drafting laws and electing leaders to maintain order. As you encounter rival bands you must decide whether you want to negotiate trades, absorb them into your nation, or take what you can by force. Other people can be a great resource but also a huge threat, and the choices you make will define your society over time.
As you expand further across America you can rediscover lost technology from the old world to increase the power of your nation, but keep in mind that this power previously destroyed civilization and could easily do so again if you make bad decisions. Become strong enough and you can face the ultimate test against the Ancients, immortal leaders from the pre-war era who will not quietly concede their position at the top of the food chain. Do you have what it takes to fulfil your destiny and lead an empire that will stand the test of time?
While Afterworld doesn't have a release date set for PC, you can wishlist it now on Steam to be notified of developments as they happen.
