Set in the Middle Ages, England is at war following the death of the King, and during this turmoil you must become one of four Saxon lords then build an army to take control of the country and seize the crown. To do this, you travel around the strategic world map securing territories by negotiation or combat, conducting castle sieges, swordfighting incursions, and even taking part in jousting tournaments to prove your worthiness to lead the nation.
The Legend Returns is more than just a remaster, as it includes three different experiences. In Retro Mode you can play the original 1986 adventure in all its glory, lovingly preserving the 16-bit presentation in a way that will get retro gamers right where it's pure. Classic Mode, on the other hand, takes the original game and reimagines it with a modern facelift, with added mechanical refinements to offer smoother gameplay.
We also have the introduction of the brand new Kingdom Mode, which gives your adventures a roguelike spin with dice rolls and deck building. Working your way across a procedurally generated map, you'll need to master special dice mechanics, unlock new abilities, and develop fresh tactics to strengthen your claim to the throne.
Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns launches on August 13, 2026 for PC via Steam and GOG, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. Until then, you can follow Nordcurrent Labs on X and Facebook for the latest developments.
