Jennifer English, the actor who voiced Maelle in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, only recorded her audition tape for the game in a last-minute rush in the early hours of the morning. But she still got the job, so no harm, no foul.
When asked about what the video game audition process looks like for actors, in an interview with Radio Times Gaming, English explained that "it completely varies" depending on the job and role, though "usually, for me, it's very last minute because I've forgotten to do it and filmed very hastily wherever I am."
The actor, who's also known for her roles in Elden Ring and Baldur's Gate 3, said that if the job requires motion capture, then companies normally ask prospective actors "to film yourself from knees to head." Actors are also given casting packs, which sometimes include a scene or sometimes even just a few individual lines for the actors to perform.
"And yeah, you just whack it out, if it's me," English quipped. "Quite often, if it's just voice, I'll just be recording it on my bed at 2 o'clock in the morning, which is exactly what happened with Expedition 33 because I forgot to do it. Don't be like me. Yeah, usually last minute and late."
Elsewhere in the world of the French RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's narrative lead Jennifer Svedberg-Yen recently told us that she doesn't use generative-AI for game writing because "writing is part of the joy" and "it's also part of the pain" of life.
