Chronoscript: The Endless End's unexpected flip from 3D to 2D is a fantastic surprise
This one took me completely by surprise
The prologue trailer for Chronoscript: The Endless End that just dropped as part of the Future Games Show Summer Showcase pretty much made me smash that wishlist button immediately.
This is an upcoming exploration-based, Metroidvania-style action-adventure game that splits its narrative and gameplay across two worlds; one in 3D as the writer creates their manuscript in the manor, and then illustrated pages that you explore in 2D.
The 2D space is where you'll spend most of your game time it seems, trapped within the pages that constantly present a new challenge, deadly enemies to fight and boss battles to vanquish, none of which exactly look like a walk in the park.
With its impressive visual style, you play as the writer who's trapped within these manuscript pages, where you'll discover new "ink-traversing" moves, as well as unique abilities that you'll need for exploration and combat.
Although developer DeskWorks Inc. is careful not to use the Metroidvania genre when describing Chronoscript: The Endless End, it's certainly ticking a lot of those boxes.
With each page acting as its own location, and thousands of pages to explore, it's down to you to unravel the mystery of a thousand-year story that just doesn't end.
Chronoscript: The Endless End is dropping sometime this year on PS5 and PC. You can wishlist it on Steam right now.
