How do you top The Walking Dead? Tricky… but Robert Kirkman, creator of the original comic, has had a jolly good stab at it with his latest horror series Outcast, which this year followed his zombie saga’s path from the printed page to the small screen.
Set in a small town in West Virginia, it centres on two characters: Kyle Barnes (Patrick Fugit), who has the 'gift' to expel spirits from the possessed, and Reverend Anderson (Phillip Glenister), a tub-thumping fire-and-brimstone preacher with a penchant for smoking, drinking, and dropping the F-bomb.
Over the course of season 1's ten episodes we follow the developing relationship between the two, as well as Kyle’s struggle to be reconciled with his estranged wife, and to discover more about his abilities. It’s a dark, gripping, beautifully photographed series, with some shocking out-of-leftfield twists and compelling mysteries.

Outcast: Season 1 is available on Blu-ray and DVD from December 12, from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.
