The War of the Worlds - Full Access Preview

The War of the Worlds, the book, is perhaps the most recognizable title in science fiction. The War of the Worlds, the radio drama, famously inspired mass panic in its listeners. The War of the Worlds, the films, have earned Academy Awards and hundreds of millions of dollars.

So what is special and memorable about The War of the Worlds, the videogame, due on XBLA and PSN late this year? To begin with, it’s not the shooter or survival horror you’d expect, but a throwback “love letter” to the gorgeously rotoscoped 2D side-scrollers of the 1990s like Out of this World and Flashback. Also retro is its purposefully unforgiving difficulty level – you’ll see our hero violently electrocuted more than a few times in the video below.

Finally, it stars Patrick Stewart!

For the entire full-access experience – in which GamesRadar editors Charlie Barratt and Carolyn Gudmundson play alongside War of the Worlds lead designer Lee Cummings – click the button above. You know the one.

This game looks so friggin' boss. Also, Patrick Stewart. And there was much rejoicing.

I love classic sci-fi, and i don't want to be rude, but he beginning portions of the game seemed a bit...boring. maybe it was just a really slow start, and i require just a little bit more of a grab to get me interested.

The artstyle and presentation is awesome, it really is incredible, but the gameplay looks kind of boring, sadly.

Aww I got my hopes up that it would be based or at least feature music from Jeff Waynes musical version, that could be brilliant. I say "could" as there was a bad vehicle combat game released for the PS1

visually very stunning, I was reminded of Limbo by the very dark and bleak feel...not really convinced by it, but something to keep an eye on

This game looks like it could be brilliant or really boring. Looking forward to finding out more.

"...love letter to Flashback and Out of This World, Heart of Darkness, Prince of Persia.." That list includes three games which defined my idea of what games could be. I'm excited.

Though I should add that I hope the constant Patrick Stewart Narration is only part of the alpha build. God, it's annoying. 'Cause you know what made Flashback, PoP, and Out of This World so special? We really got inside those characters' heads. No, that's not it. ...Atmosphere, that was it. And nothing helps a game feel atmospheric like narration! No, that's not right...

Hmm... this could definitely be worth a couple of quid... looks to be more inspired from the original novel as well as opposed to any of the modern remakes which is cool... the controls don't look to be the tightest though, heres hoping its all gravy by the time its released! ... oh and Sasquatch009, it's Picard dude... also rent was abolished by Stardate 40674.7 :)
